Free Agent Alert: Brian Flores-DC

Flores deserves another job, when he took over the Vikings defense they were near last in points allowed. The past two seasons they have been top five in points allowed.

That being said the NFL owners are a group of petulant children, not sure they’ll look kindly at someone who exposed how the sausage is made. The Dolphins owner clearly meddled while Flo was there, he also blatantly broke the rules courting Tom Brady while still under contract and Flo was honorable enough to realize it was wrong and bail.

Flores is still young as far as coaches go, he’d need a strong GM and a good offensive coordinator to pair with him… but if I owned a needy team he would be at the top of my list. Last offseason Vrabel and Flores were my only choices as coach of the Pat’s, he’s a good coach.

Agree. I don't think he was perfect in MIA and hopefully he learned from the experience. I'm not sure Flo handled that issue correctly but I admire how he stood up for what he felt was right. Hes a damn good defensive coach. Head coach not sure but hes as deserving of an opportunity as anyone.

Not sold on Khur.

Teams keep exploiting us attacking our edges on runs and our zone coverage has holes that decent QBs exploit. On top of that, he's our LB coach and that is easily our weakest position group on defense.

Hopefully TWill coming back will help shore up some of these scheme issues.

I think he had too much meddling at the top, it was reported he wanted Herbert over Tua, it was also reported the Miami brass listened to grousing players about the offensive coaching so a change was made.

A team without a clear leader or conflicting messages is a rudderless ship… we saw that with “collaboration.”

Strong ownership is harder to find than a good coach, there are only 32 teams, fewer still job openings and many of these owners are clueless or listen to snake oil salesmen they’ve hired for advice.

We don't even KNOW what TWill can do as a DC, so I'm in no rush to see him heading the D....
I want him to get well.

Yep. I have a low opinion of Ross and Grier. They certainly didn't help matters.

Having an owner that premier coaching prospects don’t want to work for is a kiss of death for franchises.

Count ourselves lucky Jonathan was quick to see the error of his ways and get out of the way. Also that Vrabes and Josh had a soft spot for Bob.

**** that traitor.

Personally, I see that when Williams comes back, he gets an assistant head coach title or something like that. Kuhr has shown he is ready to do the job right now. The only way this SHOULDN'T happen is if Kuhr agrees he needs more time before becoming the permanent DC.

Gotta be honest, I kinda disagree here. Not sure he has proven it just yet. He isn't terrible, just hasn't shown much adaptation or creativity. Hasn't coached up that middle area all that well, where I would hope he'd excel as a LB coach. The only somewhat ok argument to make as far as "strength of schedule" goes this season is we faced some very meek offenses. He's 1/1 on the tough offensive matchups with the Bills and collapsed in the last meet with them. We kinda lucked out against against the Falcons with Penix saving us. Redzone defense hasn't been hot.

This might sound more critical than I'm intending, I don't think it's a huge worry, but I'm not sure he has shown that he's ready to be a DC. He is certainly doing well as interim, though.

Not sure I want to mess with a 13-3 coaching staff after year 1. They need to fix their red zone issues, but I think that might be personnel related. I'd rather try that first than blowing the thing up.

Agree with all of this.

I don't think I've seen Khur scheme a pass rush where we get a free runner to the QB or put the OL in a bind because of a scheme. When we do blitz OLs seem to easily pick them up.

I think we already have a decent dc. No reason to change things up. Well there’s one reason and it involves being 6’ under. But let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

His losing record and 0 playoff appearances in Miami were truly impressive.

I don't think the Patriots are shopping for a DC.
First and foremost they need to improve the personnel on that said of the ball.
Scheme isn't the problem, talent is.

I generally steer clear of angry, litigious types, nor did I think there was anything special about him as a DC.
At the very least, that's what owners and GMs are bound to be thinking

He SHOULD get a shot a DC somewhere and if he does well there he's in position to earn the respect of the players and front office for another shot at HC should that opportunity come. He's a potential interim HC who can earn the job permanently.

For the Pats, I can see them hiring him or anyone else with insight into future opponents as a "consultant" and avoid any associated drama - which of course involves a bonehead Belichick move.

You sound like you are saying that Kurh is in charge of developing the defensive game plan. I don't think he is. I don't even know if TWilliams is still desilgning each week's D and leaving the execution to Khur. The is that the thing that I'm most interested to find out is exactly who is in charge of the designing of each week's game plan, and what part does each coach contribute. For example, I would feel great if I found out that TWillilams had a hand in the mix each week.

I wouldn't mind having some knowledge about the offensive week game plan and how its constructed. Do we have one of those new fangled run and pass game coordinators.

Right now, all we know is that each week we have a defensive game plan. We know that it has for the most part, has been good at making in game adjustments. (except Bills 2) Khur seems like a capable defensive game calller, though we know that often what's called is changed at the LOS based on what the offense shows us.

Fair points, I was thinking myself that T. Williams may be still able to offer input and direct matters in some ways. And, to your point of us not knowing for sure who does what, Vrabel stepped in big time when Pees left the Titans. And furthermore, there is always the discussion to be had of, at least in regards to weaknesses on the defense: is it a personnel issue or is it a coaching issue? Sometimes you just don't have much to work with.

Hard to tell until there is some change, which I think we won't really get until the offseason: new personnel additions, potentially T. Williams coming back, etc.
