Free Agent Alert: Brian Flores-DC

Well you can definitely rule the Giants out for, doubt Mara is going to the Belichick tree after 2 absolute failure stints by coaches from his tree (Judge & Daboll)

Teams if the poistion opens could see having him on their shortlist

Bengals- They need a defensive mind in there running the show pronto. You got an offense that when healthy you'd have to have a brain dead OC for it not to be top 5

Cardinals- If Monti Ossenfort stays could see Flore being on his list.

Raiders- Wouldn't surprise me at all if Brady with his influence convinced Davis to ****can Carroll after a year for Flores. Easily could point to how Pats pulled the plug on Mayo quickly for Vrabel.

Every other team that seems like a possible opening just feels like they could go offensive minded HC (Titans, Falcons, Browns)

I generally steer clear of angry, litigious types, nor did I think there was anything special about him as a DC.
He's been very good with the Vikings. But I doubt he's looking for a lateral move.

I highly doubt most owners will have a problem with Flores, but there are some that could.

That said, I don't think NE is in the market at the moment. Williams seems to be on the path to recovery and I'm sure they will just work with what they have until their playoff run ends, at which time they'll talk to Williams, evaluate his and their future, and come up with a plan. Hopefully, Williams gets healthy and can simply resume his duties in 2026 onward, perhaps delegating more to Kuhr in camp and in game-day, to help relieve some of the load.
I don't buy the idea of a DC who needs to delegate some of his duties due to health limitations.

I did like the thought of him in Cincinnati, but I don't know if he matches up personality wise with Brown. How about him in Vegas?

As long as Flores doesn't demand high pay, he'd fit in with the Bengals and Brown would not care. The first and last thing that matters to that dude is money. Cheapest owner in the NFL by a longshot, much to his team's detriment.

Owners will perceive that Flores turned on them and the league... I am not sure anyone will be lining up to hire a guy they will surely see as "disloyal"...
OTOH he’s very good. There will be some who will place loyalty to the team they own above loyalty to the league. And that was also said the last time he was on the market and he landed the Vikings gig and did well enough that they want to resign him despite those alleged negatives you cite.

You must hate our present politics then, right?

I admit it DOES sound intriguing, but unless Williams suffers a cancer setback, I can't see Mike letting him go. It's a loyalty thing.
That’s really the wildcard in the Patriots DC question isn’t it? Not just the potential for a setback but the effect on his overall health and vigor and desire. Does it leave him with the desire to grind as hard as that job demands, or does he find the time with family and taking care of himself is too precious now for him to make the sacrifices that job requires?

What makes him angry and litigitous?... I sure loved how angry the defense played under him in 2018...

Probably a pipe dream, but vrabel - jmd - flores would dominate especially if we address edge/lb/safety.

I wonder if hes trying to be a hc or if hes still being blackballed

He did a phenomenal job in 2018. Under Flores, the Pats held the explosive Rams to 3 points in the SB. A year earlier they gave up 41 in the SB under Matt Patricia.

Not saying I want him back, but you have to give credit where credit is due.

Flo and Vrabes run different defenses. No chance

Respectfully RW, it wouldn't matter if they were twin sons of different mothers when it comes to defensive philosophies.
The NFL is printing money of the Crucial Catch merch all in behind its cancer awareness initiative; You Can't Fire Cancer Guy

Silly takes.

People sure do have fuzzy memories. Ross demanded Flores tank and Flores said no and had evidence. Given it is modern day America the billionaire more or less got away scot free and Flores lost his job and got blackballed by most future employers. Justice? I think not.
IIRC ..Not just tanking; Ross also had Brady on the yacht while TB was still a Patriot and he wanted Flo to help sell Phish to TB. Flo refused to do it cause it was tampering and I think that was main reason Ross fired him. Litigating an illegal firing (or at least under compensating after firing-Breaking contract) cause the owner asked you to do multiple wrong things doesn’t seem like „an ANGRY LITIGOUS TYPE“. More on order of justified.

Other owners just blackballed him for a while cause he ratted out one of their own, who then got covered/protected by GoTo Hell.

I never want anything to do with Flores - he's entitled and a malcontent.

As far as T-Will, not sure if he'd be good or not. The only chance he got was a disaster vs the Raiders, and made the league-worst Raiders look like champs. So, I'm fine if he stays on as an advisor. But, I'm fine either grooming Kuhr more and letting him grow, or bringing in someone with more experience. (Hey everyone, how about Matty P ?!?)

First, I think Flores is going to get head coaching consideration.

Second, Flores doesn't run the same defense that Vrabel does as far as I know.

Third, I think if Vrabel brings anyone in to run the defense it will be Shane Bowen. Bowen did an excellent job running the defense under Vrabel in Tennessee with the defense being one of the top in the league in 2021.

I don't think Kraft would push Vrabel to hire someone on the defensive side of the ball like many assume he did with McDaniels on offense. Vrabel is the defensive expert and I don't think Kraft would question his decisions on that side of the ball.

Flores isn't coming here. Vrabel wouldn't want someone that mercurial. I have no idea of Williams value. How much has he contributed to the defense that comes across as the little engine that could? Not sold on Zac Kuhr. I do like an aggressive defense. Sometimes I felt we didn't game plan effectively and were not as aggressive as I wanted. This is something outsiders (me) really can't evaluate.

This seems a tad premature as we do not know how Terrell Williams is doing and whether or not after his bout with the big C if he has the energy/desire to continue with the rigors of the DC expectations...
Then there is Zach Kur who seems to have filled in nicely....
I like Brian Flores, but would he might only be a rental as he may have designs on a HC gig...

I like Bflo but don’t think his vibe fits with this group. Same way I feel about AJ brown.

2 issues I have w Zac:
1. he is still LB coach, so he is part-timing it. ( not his fault, but MAYBE if he was dedicated, he could do better.)
2. he seems to have this pattern of letting other team run their scripted plays vs a base/ vanilla D. Then he reacts to what they trying to do and seems to recover fairly well for rest of game. Net are all these 1st drive TDs. Maybe if he was more anticipatory in game planning week prior or could still see what they trying to do without going vanilla.

Personally, I see that when Williams comes back, he gets an assistant head coach title or something like that. Kuhr has shown he is ready to do the job right now. The only way this SHOULDN'T happen is if Kuhr agrees he needs more time before becoming the permanent DC.

We'll never know the specifics, but T. Williams' health may eventually force a change at DC in New England. I know quite a few men who had prostate cancer, some with advanced cancer that spread to local lymph nodes. All of them required prostate removal and a couple required lymph node removal and follow up radiation. The longest any of them was out of work was 8 weeks. I get that the rigors of coaching an NFL defense are pretty high, but one has to wonder if his cancer was advanced to the point where he may not be able to come back at all.
