I just don't see how this guy is even being considered for the top 15, let alone a lock for the 1st round. By all accounts he's going to need several years of coaching and weight training before he can be expected to be NFL ready.

At the Rose Bowl he weighed 230. He reportedly gained 20 pounds when he showed up at the Combine, where he performed poorly and his strength is supposed to be straightline speed. His lateral movement is considered weak and he doesn't have the strength to take on blocks.

If the Patroits took this kid I would go bonkers! Hopefully the Bills or some body will make that mistake ahead of them.

I agree with #2 on their list also btw.

you're already bonkers. at 23, maybin would be a steal.

I say Mark Sanchez has the chance to be the biggest bust if he is thrown into the starting position right away. I'm talking Alex Smith bust. I watched him all year at USC and I really didn't see anything special about him. He benefited a lot from having superior talent playing against inferior talent. And their right about his ability under pressure. Although no QB likes to be under pressure, Sanchez did freak out when teams were able to get after him. Sanchez was able to overcome it because their defense bailed him out. I just don't understand how this guy thinks he NFL ready after playing one season in college.

The only time I saw Maybin play was against USC in the rose bowl and he was pretty much invisible.

ALWAYS respect top ranked defensive athletes that hail from Penn State

Paterno has not been as good with that talent this decade as he was in the 90s,but you better respect those guys that come out in the upper tier.

Maybin will be a star in this league ... within 4 years

Maybin will take some time to develop. Very athletic OLB/E. Reminds me of Lavar Arrington-not a great thing.

You know, that's precisely the problem. I like Maybin quite a bit, but first-rounders need to produce in their first 1 - 2 years, not toward the end of their contract. In a way, I'm hoping some team overdrafts him, spends a few years developing him, and then cuts him just as he's on the cusp of greatness. Maybe by then we'll have use for him.

I highly doubt Sanchez will bust, but that's just me. I think he'll be a franchise quarterback, and drastically improve every year. He's a good player with great anticipation, timing, and accuracy. Plus he realizes that he's in the national spotlight, and he's worked hard to acquit himself well. That speaks highly of his personality/disposition. He's going to be a good quarterback in this league for a long time.

I don't know if Maybin's going to be a star or not but this decade'd been mediocre for defensive players from Penn state:
(defensive 1st rounders since 2000)
Courtney Brown, Lavar Arrington, Jimmy Kennedy, Michael Haynes and Tamba Hali.

I agree with everyting they said. These five are all losers.

The only way I'd consider Vontae is on his second NFL contract. By that time he will have eithe rmatured some or b e outof the League. H ewil have faile denoughd and perhaps will be more open to coaching and ditchingthe cast of fawnng hangers on, just like the claque about PacMan htat t helped him get into trouble.

I agree. That senile, stubborn dinosaur JoePa has not produced anybody worthy of a first-round pick in quite awhile. I would stay away from PSU players on Day 1 - far, far away.

huddlereport.com called him a 7th round talent (Maybin).

This guy is a project and he's supposed to be a first round pick? Don't think so.

Sounds good!

However, the two mocks published on the Huddle's board today have Maybin at 23 and 30. Who said he was a 7th round talent and where did he put him on his mock?

They have some guys doing mocks and whatnot but one guy analyzes film and said he's a 7th round pick. He's a bit eccentric, he has a lot of guys as first round picks. I think he has Bear Pascoe as a 3rd rounder.

Here's a nice article from NFL.com today on "hybrid" DE/OLB types:

Draft's top hybrid DE/OLBs: Popularity of 3-4 front creates demand

I don't agree with their rankings or with some of what they say (and how they got Everette Brown at 274 lbs. is beyond me; the Larry English 274 lb. weight is also an error, from NFL.com's original combine weigh-in which mistakenly listed him at 272# instead of 254#), but it's an interesting read.

Fortune Teller? How are they losers? All 5 are going to be day 1 picks in the NFL draft.

What's more interesting are the video clips. I looked at English, Barwin, and Matthews as the three players most often discussed. I found it interesting to note Barwin's highlight clips were split about evenly between run and pass rush. English and Matthews were more focused on the pass rush. An interesting contrast I thought.

I would agree. The clips on Maybin and Everette Brown are even more skewed to rushing the passer, especially the outside rush. That's obviously important, but still only one facet of what BB will demand from an OLB.

I will say that Maybin comes across fairly impressively in his vignette. He seems very mature, focused and determined.
