I was surprised to learn that Nick Saban is a cousin of the first Patriots coach. Is this widley known?

Uh, it's wikipedia so it's not exactly, as they say a peer-reviewed journal. It's just a posting put up and amended by others. While it may be true, I'd rely on a few other sources before accepting it as gospel.

I just read the Wikipedia and it appears that Lou Saban, the old coach is Nick's cousin, not BB......
