Falcons, Like the Patriots Are Still Searching For Consistency

Steve Balestrieri

Last week the Falcons had a 17-0 lead over the Dolphins at home and somehow lost 20-17 to a Miami team that is struggling to score points.

Everybody forgets this because of the hype surrounding that offense, but the Falcons lost five regular season games last year. Several to bad teams. They had a defense that was ranked near the bottom of the league and their QB has one season under his belt of performing consistently and not gagging in big moments. Everybody wants to pretend this Falcons team is some sort of juggernaut before they have accomplished anything, but it is all smoke and mirrors so far.

They will probably get their "revenge" on Sunday night as our so called defense is no match for their offense. But I don't see a great team when I look at them. I just don't.

While it's frequently been noted that Atlanta's player personnel hasn't changed much from last season in key areas, I've rarely seen mention of the fact that both their OC and DC are new.

Steve Sarkisian was brought in to replace Kyle Shanahan, and Marquand Manuel was promoted from DB coach to replace **** Smith who was fired after the Super Bowl (now LB coach with the Chargers).

One might think these changes could be a least a small factor.

I saw a fast defense that forced our offense to take small pieces at a time. While we were able to move the ball on them, we did not do a great job of putting up points for most of the game.
The Falcons are second only to the Chiefs in terms of the best teams we have played this year, and we’ve pretty much struggled through most stretches of the season.
They certainly have my respect.
But as we have seen over the past 16 years, we seem to play our best against good teams when it looks like we are coming in hobbling. So I hope this team can continue that tradition.

To be honest, I don't think any team is really going to be a dominant, consistent, weekly force, especially now that KC has lost 2 in a row and shown they are vulnerable too.

That was even true last season except for us. Some might add Dallas, but 9 of their 16 games were decided by one score, and they went a pretty unsustainable 7-2 in those games. They're 0-2 in similar games so far this season.

So many records will be determined by one possession games. Both New England and Atlanta could be 1-4 if we hadn't won any of those games. And only a few QBs in history have shown the ability to consistently win close games, and Brady is one of them, which gives us an incredible advantage.

Ryan & the rest of the offense will re-discover their consistency, as has every other team in the league, when they play this "defense" on Sunday night.

Let's hope it takes them another week to find theirs!

And we could be 6-0 if the refs hadn't stolen the Carolina game from us and our OC had enough sense to not try three or four failed draw plays into the guts of the defense (without a power back) on third and short against KC. So what? We are 4-2. That's the reality.
