ESPNews: Goodell issues statement: "Pats violated league policy"

Isnt that exactly what happened?? They videotaped signals, correct? So, that creates a competitive imbalance. They werent doing it for ****s and giggles. Whether it was an advantage for the game at hand, the next time they meet, or whenever......it doesnt matter. Still cheating.

Merriman much?
Your team should be the LAST one on our board complaining of cheating

Re: ESPN NEWS just said Goodell...

from what i understand, teams regularly switch the signals from week to week. the jets wont use the same ones this weekend, never mind in the second match up.

and you can establish tendencies through any of the legal channels.

i know everybody thinks this is a big deal. yet nobody can explain why.
That's the $64,000 question... It's illegal, and yet they did it anyway. They got caught, got warned, and still kept doing it. Those facts alone imply there is some sort of advantage in the activity.

That's ridiculous... when we played those teams, they were virtually already eliminated (especially the Lions)... you cannot possibly be suggesting that the Patriots cheated in those games because they thought they might face GB or Det in the Super Bowl.... I mean, puh-leeze...

I agree. I think the feed had to be going someplace. I really cannot see why they would do it to teams like the Lions and Packers, I don't buy the SB theory either.

EXACTLY!! right on the button! The definition of cheating is
v. tr.
To deceive by trickery; swindle: cheated customers by overcharging them for purchases.
To deprive by trickery; defraud: cheated them of their land.
To mislead; fool: illusions that cheat the eye.
To elude; escape: cheat death.

v. intr.
To act dishonestly; practice fraud.
To violate rules deliberately, as in a game: was accused of cheating at cards.
Informal To be sexually unfaithful: cheat on a spouse.
Baseball To position oneself closer to a certain area than is normal or expected: The shortstop cheated toward second base.

n.
An act of cheating; a fraud or swindle.
One who cheats; a swindler.
A computer application, password, or disallowed technique used to advance to a higher skill level in a computer video game.
Law Fraudulent acquisition of another's property.
Botany An annual European species of brome grass (Bromus secalinus)

Re: ESPN NEWS just said Goodell...

Can someone explain why nobody has considered the possibility that there was a live feed? I can tell you that if there was an antenae on that camera (the little rubber ones), there was a live feed going somewhere.
See post 188 IMHO, there has to have been a live feed going somewhere. That's the only possible explanation for why they would do it against the Packers or Lions.

Your punishment is irrelevent to us! We just wanna line up and play some smashmouth with your boys! Let's move it to Thursday night - we're ready!

So it's a competitive imbalance to do that, but not to have a guy sitting right there charting the plays and signals and using them later. See, that's where the logic breaks down. You just want to smear the Patriots because they beat your team in the playoffs last year.

No, actually I dont care if it was Miami or some other team I couldnt care less about. I dont like cheating. I didnt like Merriman doing what he did or Harrison for that matter. I understand what youre saying about the logic in the two and I agree to an extent. But you cant stop a team from charting plays and signals and what they do during the course of a game or study afterwards. Using a camera is just plain blatant. Take a step back and think about it. If a team can figure out what another team does (tendencies, signals), then more power to them. But to just rip it off.....that's not right.

I agree, it's terribly unlikely, but you KNOW the lengths to which BB and the Pats go to be prepared. Would you want to be the guy that dismissed said teams, only to meet one of them in the Superbowl and NOT have the goods on them?

But charting the plays IS just ripping them off. That's why you change your signals, disguise them, mix things up. It's part of the game. If you don't want it to be part of the game, then ban it altogether and give the defense a radio too, but don't have the ridiculous contrast of a guy with a clipboard being okay while a guy with a camera isn't.

Actually, no.... YOURE team should be the last one. Ever heard of Harrison?..and now this. Not to mention prior stolen signal implication at Green Bay. You have absolutely nothing to say about Merriman anymore. You just trumped us, so thanks.

Where exactly is the statement from Goodell?

Hey MR. Pure of Heart and all that is Good, I have a question for you. Why on earth were the Bears coaches covering thier mouths with their play sheets and clip boards Sunday night? Were they afraid someone employed by the Chargers may be trying to steal some signals and plays or did they just have bad breath?

Hey Richter, you're not the only one, but you're the biggest proponent here of "what should be the rule," and how terrible the rule is, and how everybody does it, ad infinitum.

I did not notice you posting against this rule prior to this week's revelations.

Why the campaign now?

Amen. And BB knows this rule better than anyone.

This whole thing is stupid.
Ooooh, they "cheatedd.
Give me a break.
The only purpose any of this serves is to give trolls from other teams an excuse to hate on us and mask their intense jealousy of the Pats by diguising it as some sort of moral high ground.
And a-hole SD fans taliking about "honoring the game" is hysterical.
They are just like their crybaby bigmouth running back.

Because it's been brought to light recently, and I didn't even know it was a rule prior to this. I suppose everyone should have to know every minutiae of the NFL rulebook ahead of time AND complain about it in advance or their complaints should be dismissed as invalid?

Agree...and let's remind fans about Merriman and Ken Caminiti (oooohh, I think he played for the um, Padres)??

HGH =\= Steroids moron.

Harrison came completely clean and is now serving his deserved 4 game suspension for using a supplement to heal his wounds.

You, and your team, are laughable.

so what is it?

for all you know BB has a grudge against Polian and the competition committee and is trying to make a point.

until somebody shows me how it is cheating, i reject the assertion we cheated.

we violated a rule. that's the extent of it until someone - anyone - shows otherwise.

i was ready to be ashamed but then i read what 1 of the cameramen said how he used to be a coach and then he guranteed it happens by everyone. including Jets.
