Re: Per ESPN: Mike Wright re-sings

Wonderful. I really like Mike Wright. This wil complete the veteran FA portion of the offseason restocking.Money si goen. No Taylor

The D_Line depth stays very good at 6 players for three positions. It still leaves one DL position open for Titus, or for Ron Brace in the third round, at true NT reserve...

Re: Per ESPN: Mike Wright re-signs

Very reasonable deal.

Re: Per ESPN: Mike Wright re-signs

Great news, that takes a lot of the pressure off for depth in 2010.

Here is the link:

He can earn up to another $10M with escalators. A good deal all around, as he is a valuable, versatile guy depth guy who also contributes on ST.

Re: Per ESPN: Mike Wright re-signs

Agreed. Now we have at least the following DL sitaution for 2010

Warren signed
Wright signed
Wilfork could be franchised in 2010 and 2011
Smith RFA in 2010, could tendered for $2M if necessary
Seymour could be franchised if the season is uncapped
Green ????

Great news, that takes a lot of the pressure off for depth in 2010.

Re: Per ESPN: Mike Wright re-signs

I don't think Wright is worth nearly 2M a year. But no doubt someone will challenge me on this saying that Belichick is smart (I know he is) and what do I know etc etc etc.

Every time I've seen him play, he is sub-par against the run.

I'll second that. Seems like too much money for a backup player who barely performs adequately.

No, $5 million a year for a backup in Jarvis Green is too much money.

I disagree that this deal overpays Wright. He's come on as a pretty good pass rusher the past 2 years. You can't have too much DL depth, especially in the 3-4 given there are few viable alternatives.

I disagree. $2M is 1.6% of the Pats cap allotment. If you split the Pats cap number equally among 53 guys, each would average taking up $2.4M in cap space, so you could argue he is being paid as a below average player, unless he exceeds expectation and hits his escalators.

So, clearly, the guy is being paid as a backup player. I would argue he is a very good backup because he can back up all 3 positions on the DL and contribute on ST. Could he be sturdier against the run? Maybe, but I think he has played very well when asked and considering his versatility, contributions on ST and cost he is a great signing as a role player.

As a bonus, with 4 years in the system he knows what he is doing. If you had to bring someone in to replace him that player would likely take some time to learn the system and get accustomed to the players around him.

I think this is exactly the kind of signing that makes the Pats a great team. A versatile depth player that fills multiple roles at a low cost. That separates them from a lot of teams who have depth guys who are minimum-level rookies because they don't spread the wealth throughout their roster.

Everyone seems to want players for vet minimum one year contracts. To me Wright is a valuable backup at all the DL positions at a likely cap hit of about $1.4M increasing at $.3M per year. I have guessed at an initial $1M salary and a $1.6M bonus.

These are the great signings people whine about until Big Vince misses a game with a bum knee or something.

Glad to see it's a long deal with high value vs. cost.

With Green in the last year of his contract, you're looking at Wright as the probably #1 backup to at least 2 DL positions for 2010. I'm all for plugging in a reliable long-term piece in that key position for less than $2 million/year.

Exactly Wright !!

Quality, experienced, solid DEPTH at a reasonable price - :rocker:

Mike "if I am not wrong I am" Wright

Very nice signing...He is a very good special teamer and a good pass rusher from the DT position and a good back up for the end positions. Gives you a little security with some of the FAs next year. And you pay him for his production thru the escalators cant really complain with that.
