I spent a year in the MIT astrophysics PhD program before dropping out because (a) wasn't as interesting as I was expecting, and (b) because I realized that an astrophysics PhD was stuck either working for JPL or at a college, which means you have very little control over where you live. So I dropped out and (it was the very early 90s) went into software engineering where I've been since. (Physics types becoming quants was later in the decade.)

Where did you find the slide?
I'd be interested in a poll asking how many forum members actually understand what it is.
How many of us have had graduate level Physics courses?
Frankly I find the complexities of the NFL far harder to understand than Gauge theory...

I have an EE PhD From Southampton UK, but my first love was always particle physics and it was a toss up whether to take EE or Physics when I left high school for Imperial College in London. My father was a Mech. Eng so the bias was there...
I had the opportunity to take many graduate semiconductor, particle Physics and Math classes in graduate school and they were fun - even the Gauge theory ones .
I eventually ended up as a Senior Fellow with Analog Devices in Boston so the EE choice turned out pretty well.
I wish there was a course in "NFL football". I'd take it in a heartbeat. I enjoy the game enormously, but even after all this time (I moved to Boston in 1981) the nuances escape me and I stand (or more usually, sit) in awe of patsfanken, Andy Johnson and others.
