Emergency QB

You idea is good if and only if the coaches deem there to be little difference between Cassel and O'Connell in quality. Why? Because if Cassel is unable to go for more than a couple of plays, O'Connell has to take over, knocking Cassel out of the whole game even if he could have come back a series or two later.

If that's a big sacrifice, you don't risk it.

I don't think they'll risk it.
I'm not sure I follow you: Cassel starts, should he be injured severely enough to be held out of the game the Pats have the option of activating O'Connell and deactivating Cassel. If Cassel just needs to catch his breath and clear his head, Faulk or another player can take a snap or two while he gets his head clear.

Cassel is the best opportunity to win. O'Connell is not ready to play, he would be very limited with the playbook, though he has the talent to make it interesting on the wing. Leaving him as the emergency QB allows BB to activate a Ventrone or even a Crable to play STs - he'll still be there if needed.

I don't think it's necessarily just a snap or two. Guys commonly are knocked out of games and then return a quarter later. You don't want near-guaranteed 3-and-outs for that length of time.

We'll know tomorrow, or even today if Gut gets activated.
