Ejections will now be a thing in the nfl*

how many times have players been called for multiple personal fouls in one game (particularly the kind that will result in ejection)?

Not to mention witchcraft causing the balls to lose air.

Probably the #1 thing I hate about basketball. Goodell further ruining the game.

I was wondering the same thing myself. I just don't see this rule as having a significant impact. Nobody is getting ejected for a single ticky-tack penalty. It is designed to stop the obscenely dirty play we saw from Denver this past year.

Sweet! My NYJFL in action. So what if you guys are gonna have an un-coverable offensive squad... we'll just eject your players damn it!

Much easier than trying to cover Gronk, Edelman and Bennett.

Is this potential rule change being inspired by the Steelers VS Bengals WWE style "free for all" that was considered a playoff game ?

Here is the proposed rule

Talib nearly killed a guy and it cost them a half a yard, and he bragged about that fact. I agree that it's probably a dumb rule, but the officials have almost never ejected anyone for anything except hitting a ref.

They didn't even throw a flag in the Ray Lewis send off SB when a Baltimore cb threw a ref a solid 10 yards.

#integrity

So we've gotten to the point in which we are adopting soccer rules? Two yellow cards (er, personal fouls) and you are out? Will the player get to play in the next game? I mean, c'mon this is just silly.

As others have said 15 yards is already a big deal. We've seen enough bad calls to the point where unwarranted 15 yards penalties are bad enough, nevermind getting a guy wrongfully kicked off the field.

I'm not the biggest soccer viewer, but I believe what happens is when a player gets a yellow card it takes a LOT for that second card to be thrown. Therefore, if using this context I bet refs will be less likely to throw a flag on a player after his first penalty (as such, penalties that would normally get called won't).

I'll be honest. Tossing a guy for being called twice for any of the 3 items listed is fine by mean.

1) Throwing a punch
2) Abusive language/gestures
3) Taunting.

When have you seen a single player get called twice for taunting??

Not all unsportsmanlike penalties result in yardage lost. Many of them are offsetting. In fact, it can sometimes be a little silly how a fight can break out with literally no consequences because they often just offset the penalties and (unless this rule passes) it has to be pretty blatant for an ejection. So this should cut back on that because, presumably, if you receive an offsetting unsportsmanlike call, that's your first strike.

Of course they are, why do you think they advertise Viagra and Cialis so much?

Oops, nevermind, I misread the thread topic.

I feel like it isn't really needed. 15 yards is huge.

15 yards and fines are effective... you can increase the fine even more if they feel its not a big enough deterrent, or do it like some european countries do with parking tickets.. have it be based on a percent of their base salary for that year. They also have the ability to suspend players as well, which anyone who had Odell Beckham Jr in fantasy football last year would never forget lol (me)

This just scares me because a lot of times there are real BS roughing the passer/unneccessary roughness penalties called in a game.. and those real ticky tack ones could end up getting a key player on a team ejected from the game

Fines are a joke. And as I noted above, it certainly isn't always 15 yards. All too often, the penalties offset and there aren't any consequences whatsoever.

This really isn't the end of football, like some here are making it out to be. I got really sick of Denver's cheap shots last year, so I don't blame the league for reacting to them.

Window dressing. Legitimately a zero impact rule used for PR.

They aren't talking about facemasks, roughing the passer. It is for unsportsmanlike conduct - fighting, taunting, abusing refs, etc.

The thing is, players can already be ejected if refs deem their behavior warrants it and they aren't unless it is so bad the refs are forced to because refs don't want to do that. They won't want to call a 2nd taunting or fighting either so they will find ways around it unless it is so blatant they can't.

Basically - same result with the new rule but PK, ESPN, and the other media lapdogs will praise Roger, Troy, and the Stache for cleaning up the game.

15 yards is a big deal when there is 15 yards to concede.

However when the offense is on their own 1 and the lineman decides to punch an opponent, 18 inches of field space doesn't meaningfully punish the team.

The same applies to 1st and goal at the 1 for the offense and the defender decides to rip an opponents head off. 18 inches is not a significant penalty.

For intimidation and/or removal by injury purposes, it is an extremely smart/rational foul to commit as the cost is almost nil. Fine's don't modify in-game behavior; the threat of automatic ejections may modify in-game behavior.

If they're going to toss guys for abusive language, the entire rosters of each team will be wiped out by halftime. That's so absurd, I would think that it's a joke if that assclown of a commissioner didn't run this league (into the ground).
