Edelman

It's a similar argument as with Tebow. Tebow is an extremely "rare" talent but where do you play him? How much value does he add?

Tebow is in a different category of course having had much more success in college in the NFL but they're both swiss army knife types.

You answered your own question.

They're both rare talents, but not all rare talents are created equal. Tebow is fast, strong, smart, has an incredible work ethic and is just a natural leader. Being a natural leader on its own is something few can do, Tebow has a lot more than that, it just doesn't translate into being a good quarterback at the pro level.

Edelman is a hard worker with good speed, strength, quickness and is smart enough to play on all 3 units and can hold his own as a backup, and he's selfless enough to play the final snap of an offensive series, run right back into the field for a snap on ST, and then stay on the field to play defense, or reverse the order. But at the same time that Tebows skills don't make him a great QB, Edelmans skill don't make him the next Welker.

Edelman will still stay on the roster, he is one of the most valuable backups on the team.

Many people seem to have an opinion that just because a player isn't a day 1 starter they are expendable, and its even weirder when it comes to Edelman because he basically is a starter, he just doesn't get his name listed on the big boards because ST starters don't count for whatever reason.

I agree he's a valuable backup and is a virtual lock to make the roster.
I'd like to see him become a consistent WR but I have my doubts that will happen. Only a small % of the board thinks he's expendable.

He needs to know the rules. His blocker did, as he was telling him to kneel it.

From the offseason threads about him, people have differing opinions on him. I'm on the skeptical side.
No question that the SNAFU was all on him. No excuses, but it was a mistake. There are a lot of them in the preseason...by everyone. The key is will be ever make it again. AND it doesn't negate the strides he seemingly has made as a receiver.

My TV must be only half working because I only saw Edes catch about half that many.

Didn't help himself with the disasterous goal line PR screwup. But better now than in season.

Your right, according to the box score thread, he had 4 catches for 36yds.

My question, gronk is WHY? In EVERY chance that he's had to play significant snaps in the regular offense he has shown he CAN be a consistent receiver. He did it as a rookie when Welker went down, and he did last night, and IIRC during other pre season games over the last 3 years.

Clearly he's a much more polished receiver now than when he came into the league. He's absolutely ready to "seamlessly" move into the slot position should anything happen to Welker. And I think there is more evidence that this is the case than there is that he can't. He problem is that between Welker, Lloyd, Gronk and Hernandez, he's simply not going to get a lot of opportunities to show what he can do.

it's preseason...lloyd and welker weren't out there too long..along with gronk and hernandez..i hope he would be catching a lot of balls

Most players who have been playing defensive back have been doing it for years. Edelman'd been doing it for a couple of weeks. It makes you wonder how good a DB he'd be if the Patriots had put him there back in 2009 instead of as a WR.

A lot of defensive backs converted in college from wide receivers, there is a lot of skill over lap.

Edelman was a QB in college.

Edelperson caught the other four.

You don't think i knew that? I made that comment to highlight the similarities between the position he now plays and the position he plays in emergencies.

From reading your post I did not think you knew that and I doubt I was alone.

Right and how many people have a guy sitting on their roster who is playing in a backup roll would have the same production as a player who is clearly best in the league as a slot receiver.

I know it's the next guy up and all, but it doesn't mean it's a perfect replacement. I think it would be fair to say that Edleman would do a reasonable job as a slot receiver and it would change the dynamics of the offense if he were to be out there, but that doesn't ean the offense falls apart.

BB values special teams play and he likes to have a guy he can throw into offense/defense should he be short staffed for a game or two.

Meh. I hope he flashes something this preseason but I didn't see it last night.

He can return punts, I'll give him that. On the other hand how about that KO return muff, which he compounded by picking running out of the endzone....to the 3 -yard line.

I would be fairly certain he was told to do exactly this by the coaching staff (not the muff but the subsequent run). In preseason, what would be the point of kneeing the ball in the endzone? How does winning a preseason game help you prepare for the regular season? By trying to make a return, he not only gets to try the return, but the offense gets practice at being trapped inside the 5 if he fails.

I don't believe that he was told to do that by his coaches. I think he wasn't sure of the rule, and that is on him and the coaches, including BB.

Edelman is caught in three numbers games that will only become clear after the initial cut down.

There's so much depth at the receiver position this year that he could be the odd man out there. He's not competitive in the wideout category and Hernandez is a tougher matchup as Welker's backup in the slot.

As a backup DB he isn't in the picture with what we've seen and read about the veteran additions and the rookies.

He makes the team as a special teams player for certain - he's one of the key guys there. But how many slots are there for special teams players?

Injuries will be a big determinant of Edelman's sticking on this roster. If everybody stays healthy, I think he's gone and will be instantly picked up elsewhere.

IMO, Edelman starts to look a lot more valuable when you start projecting a 45/46 man game roster as opposed to the 53 man roster.

From reading your post I did not think you knew that and I doubt I was alone.

I was comparing the positions of CB and WR to each other. I didn't think it needed to be stated that he was a QB, I am well aware of that, in fact, he was the scout team QB when we played Denver last year.

People thinking he'll be cut are out of their mind. Edelman's versatility is invaluable to our depth. His ability to punt and kick return is unmatched in our current roster. Plus, it's a real possibility that this will be Welker's last year. Edelman has backed up Welker for the past 3 seasons, knows the system, and showed a few years ago that he can perform at a high level in that position. Plus his salary is team friendly.

Getting rid of him and keeping Branch or Stallworth doesn't make sense.
