Edelman national HOF discussion

He's not going to make it. HoF values All-Pros and volume stats first, then they will think about rings. Even if Edelman owns most post-season catching records (ignoring Jerry Rice), he won't make it.

Which is unfortunate considering he will end up #2 all-time post-season receiving yards eventually, while also being the #2 all-time post-season reception. I think they should give Edelman some sort of recognition.

Lynn Swan being in the HOF is a complete joke. Was a very good player for about 5 years and had some memorable Super Bowls while playing on a great defensive team. Him being in over contemporary, Stanley Morgan is a travesty.
Regular season
Morgan 557 catches 10716 yds-- 19.2 ypc--- 72 tds---

Swann 336 catches 5462 yds-- 16.3 ypc--- 51 tds----
Swann had 3 monster Super Bowls

Swann was elected in 2001. The knocks on him were career years and stats. The leader stats were much lower in 2001, and he missed 13 times even then. When you scan the list of names appearing in the NFL near or after 2001, there are tons of names with more receiving yards. He is now 237 on the receiving yards list with lots on non-HOF'ers above him.

There were 20 players this year with 1,000 receiving yards or more. In 1980, there were 8. Running backs will have more receiving yards than that.

Jules is awesome, but the Hall looks at stats and Pro Bowl seasons (0). The post-season may tip the balance at some point, but a receiver with 2 years with over 1,000 receiving yards likely won't make the cut.

People focus on the receptions but Edelman also only has like 5 postseason receiving TDs. Antonio Freeman had 9 and Ernest Givins had 8. David Givens had 7, and guys like Amani Toomer, Jimmy Smith, Rod Smith, and Keenan McCardell had 6 or 7 (and all of those guys had better regular season stats than Edelman, or at least compare relatively favorably). Among active players, he's behind the following: Gronk, Vernon Davis, Julio, Michael Crabtree, Demaryius Thomas, Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, and... Danny Amendola.

Rice has 22.

None of this is meant to diminish Edelman, but the playoff stats have more to do with the number of games played... which, frankly, has more to do with Brady and Belichick.

Edelman's been great, I think he's probably been underrated a large part of his career which has led to him never being voted to a Pro Bowl, but the Hall of Fame stuff is so far out there. Let's take it for what it was, deserved gushing from an energetic and knowledgable former player and commentator in Romo.

This is just Lynn Swann vs. Stanley Morgan in reverse. If it worked before, could work again, except in our favour this time.

Patriots Mt. Rushmore? Come on, have we completely forgotten about Andre Tippett, Ray Clayborn, Richard Seymour, Willie McG, Tedy Bruschi, Ty Law? Someone from the D has to be there. Did Adam Vinatieri win us a couple of Super Bowls and become the greatest kicker of all time while he was here and is Matthew Slater not worthy? And if you're keeping it all O...the comparison between Stanley Morgan and Jules is relevant here too. Bottom line is that we have had four all-time greats play in NE for significant parts of their career, and you named the first three. The fourth was Mike Haynes but he left us for the Raiders in the prime of his career due to bad ownership.

I could care less about the HOF, but Jules has absolutely killed several playoff games. 2014 vs the Ravens, 2014 SB, 2015 vs Chiefs on one foot, 2016 vs Texans, huge catch in 2016 SB, and both playoff games this year. Plus he was not too shabby in 2009 vs Ravens even if Pats were.

Romo isn't the only one.

who cares...all it would do if it happened would be the major racist triggering of racists like Rob Parker. Just win, baby....let the racist morons have their stats heroes.

In the 2015 season, Jules, with one foot, ate Peters for lunch and dinner.

If there were more QBs like the goat, and more coaches like BB..then Edelman would be viewed as a top WR in football

QUOTE="primetime, post: 5513026, member: 3645"]Welker is a longshot and he was a better player.[/QUOTE]

This.

if curt warner is in the hof. anybody can get in.

you're a real insano monster, you know that? don't you realize you just triggered a 5 hour sobfest by Mark Brunell?...krist, now Warner's man-faced, sainted wife, Brenda "Ostrich Neck" will be holding prayer vigils for the triggered masses you so callously insulted...nice goin' pal

The fact that the national media has started considering the idea means he's already gotten closer than I thought he would, so what do I know?

I think it's bedtime.

A couple things caught my eye in this thread.

1. People would prefer Welker to Edelman. Really? I'd take Edelman 100 times out of 100 in that battle.

2. Curt Warner was a helluva running back, but probably doesn't deserve to be in the HOF.

No. His career regular season stats, whether over time or at their height, compare unfavorably to guys like Terry Glenn, Joey Galloway, Stevie Johnson, and Keenan McCardell. Guys who have no shot of ever getting in. Welker is a longshot and he was a better player.

Think about all the receivers he'll be competing against who will be up after he retires: Torry Holt, Hines Ward, Reggie Wayne, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall, AJ Green, Wes Welker, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders, Jordy Nelson, Demaryius Thomas, eventually Julio Jones and TY Hilton. Not all of those guys will get in, and - homer goggles off - is there any of those you wouldn't have traded for Edelman straight up at their height?

Edelman's been a tremendous player and truly clutch in the playoffs but playoff stats simply mean little to voters except for quarterbacks. And Edelman also doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. He's not an all-time great. He's never been among the 5 best WRs in the league. He's not Randy Moss, he's not Jerry Rice, he's not even near Cris Carter or Andre Reed. Cliff Branch has far better regular season stats, All Pros, three rings, comparable playoff stats, and was only a semifinalist twice and has no chance of ever getting in. Edelman has no chance.

But he is an all-time great Patriot. He'll get that red jacket and deserve every thread in it. We'll never forget him.

Only Hall of Famers from this era of the Patriots are Brady, Belichick, Gronk, and (insofar as he counts) Revis. Slater will be a semifinalist or whatever as they nod to special teams mattering but never sniff a finalist bid, just like Tasker. It's a while out but White could sniff it too. Lots of truly memorable players for all of us though. But let's be honest, the lack of the Hall of Fame or even All Pro caliber players beyond the QB and coach hint at just how great Brady and Belichick have been.
Adam V will be a colts?
