Julian Edelman a Green Bay Packer? It almost happened in 2009
I've seen a few snarky posts about who gives a **** about so and so in the 6th or 7th round, but after every draft, there's a mad rush to sign priority UDFAs. Having extra picks in the 7th is like getting exclusive rights to those priority UDFAs, and one of the big reasons we were able to get Edelman.
Every year, a Malcolm Butler or Chris Hogan could slip right through the draft. Most of those guys end up as JAGs, but every once in a while, they become huge pieces on championship teams. Trading down to get a couple extra late picks lets us get a few more of those priority UDFAs.
So if BB does it again this year, don't roll your eyes or shout out, who cares? The Julian Edelmans and Matt Cassels and Tully Banta-Cains and David Givens types care. And so should we.
