Patriots in position to receive multiple compensatory draft picks in 2018

As it stands now, the Patriots currently project to receive 2018 fourth- and fifth-round compensatory draft picks, according to contract wizard Nick Korte of OverTheCap.com. Korte detailed why that is the case as part of his cancellation chart (the picks are from defensive end Jabaal Sheard signing with the Indianapolis Colts and tight end Martellus Bennett joining the Green Bay Packers).

I found it amazing that Logan Ryan would be worth a 3rd-round comp pick. It gets cancelled out with the Gilmore signing, but hard to believe he rose that high when you look at a few years ago and people were screaming for him to be cut.

For those not familiar, the formula for compensatory picks has never been made available. Projections are based on formulas built on past comp picks, which is a long way of saying they're fairly accurate, but not 100% accurate due to variables we can't factor in.

Also, some free agents signed may be cut before week 10 which would cause them to drop from the cancellation charts. So this is an early projected list, but don't bank on it.

Yeah the idea that Ryan and Gilmore cancel out is worth a raised eyebrow, for sure. Our expectations are that Gilmore will be materially better than Ryan. Hope so, anyway.

It's not based on judging who is better, it's based upon the contract. A 3rd is the highest so if Ryan is worth a 3rd he would cancel out the best player ever signed in FA.

It's a little bit weird, but the rule is that contracts cancel downwards before they cancel upwards. IOW, if you lose FAs whose new contracts are $10M, $8M, and $5M, then a player signing a contract for $11M would cancel out the $10M, while a player signing a contract for $9M would cancel out the $8M contract.
