I think the pats draft a safety this year...maybe Justin Reid at 31?

I don't follow college enough to know about individual players, but that might be the best solution to everything. Ideally, drafting a safety could solve (assuming the player pans out), three different problems now: 1) Preparing for the next few years as McCourty/Chung get older, 2) Upgrading the #4 safety position as an actual defender, and 3) Mitigating a potential early season Harmon suspension.

Of course, that 3rd benefit is tough, since it's hard to rely on a rookie in his first year, especially at the beginning of the season.

Don't really care about the weed. His judgment is questionable though, for sure.

Big question now will be how much discipline? Do we know whether or not he's already in the drug program? I was under the impression that they don't disclose that until they reach the point where fines/suspensions are given out, so he could be in already or not.

If he is suspended, what's the short term plan for safety depth that doesn't include Richards playing more snaps?

We don’t hear about fines either. Alan Branch failed three tests without us knowing, and it wasn’t until the fourth failed test (which was successfully appealed) before we found out. If Harmon wasn’t in the drug program, he’s most likely looking at the standard one game suspension. If that’s the case, then they’re not going to make major draft decisions centered around keeping Richards off the field.

It wouldn't surprise if Bill were thinking along those same lines already, though I probably wouldn't use 31 on Reid myself, even after taking the Harmon situation into account. I still want to see how the availablity pool at LT, LB & DE shakes out first.
