Patriots gain some cap space by cutting Isaac Sopoaga | ProFootballTalk

The Patriots have lined up visits with several free agents over the last two days, but they have yet to add anyone to the roster.

On Wednesday, they dropped someone. Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com reports that the team has told defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga that he will be released.

Sopoaga came to the Pats in an October trade with the Eagles as New England scrambled to find ways to replace Vince Wilfork in the middle of their defensive line. Sopoaga saw action in six games and made two tackles before being inactive for the final two regular season games and both playoff contests.

That did little to alleviate the loss of Wilfork and the Patriots gain $2.5 million in cap space by parting ways with Sopoaga. Some of that money could be useful if the Patriots, as rumored, decide to pursue cornerback Darrelle Revis now that he’s been cut by the Buccaneers.

That saves the Patriots a net of $2,080,000 on the 2014 cap.

Perhaps a signal that the team is close to some signings?

This represents good news to me in that Wilfork is then staying, and will have his current contract reworked into an extension. This would gain some more cap room for a realistic run at Revis.

The only reason I felt they were keeping Soap around was for insurance, in case we ended up with just one NT (Siliga).

Zusevics got cut, as well. Man, this time of year must really suck for the guys at the bottom of the roster.

What a waste of a trade ... Sopoaga was useless.

If Wilfork gets even one penny more than what he is currently owed, then that is not good news
at all.

While this is true, it really wasn't that bad, we needed a big guy in the middle and we only really moved down 24 spots.

Worth the gamble IMO

I didn't mind the deal and I agree ...

2 Jags outplayed him ... that's some serious suckage.

Why are guys that far at the bottom suddenly cut? Below top 51. It's not for cap purposes. And it's not like we're at the roster limit either.

Really doubt that he will. The point of working out an extension is spreading the hit that would come this year, over the next few seasons.
