I believe the argument Chavous is making is that those crazy rookie deals set the market at a higher rate that has a concentric effect on salaries for vets. Veterans can say, "Well JaMarcus Russell got xyz dollars and I'm WAY better than he is!" That kind of thing.

There's a legit point in there somewhere, but overall I think that's just posturing. It would be far better for the league - players included - if rookies had to EARN their big pay day, at least somewhat.
