24 + 28 = 10

Would like to see the second round values as well, as that is what I think they will do with one of their first round pix for this year and next. Trade one of their #1's for #2 this year and next.

Um...8.

Maybe he meant "for sure," or maybe he just added wrong. I don't know how these trades go. Do they add the points "exactly" or do they negotiate?

When it comes to trades, negotiating is never an option. I am pretty sure that negotiation, independent thought, and a desire to win are all banned as part of the agreement with the players' association.

The only problem I have with the chart is that it doesn't take into account two things, 1) a player or two who may be head and shoulders above the rest of the draft and 2) the relative weakness or streength of a draft class. In a draft with ten top players and then a substnatial dropoff, the value of the top ten whould be much higher as it should be for one player who stands out.
It is a great equalizer but it should be taken with a grain of salt. In addition with the disparity in salaries given to the top 4 or 5 players (which was not true when this chart was originated by the Cowboys Jimmy Johnson IIRC in the early 90's), I think some tweaking is necessary to increase the value at the top.
Just my $0.02,

The chart is a tool (perhaps in more ways than one ). From what I've read, it was intended as a starting point, not as the be-all-and-end-all it's become.

If a team's willing to sweeten the pot (or accept less, etc.), then you'll often find the numbers don't match up exactly.

For example, last year, the Pats traded 52 [380] and 75 [215] for Green Bay's 36 [540]. So, in theory, the Packers should have given their fifth-rounder* to the Pats [~30] to even things out. But, in the grand scheme of things, making the trade was more important to Belioli than getting 100% of the "owed" value.

Of course, the chart is almost 20 years old, and doesn't reflect the change in contract length (6/5 in the first round, 4 thereafter).

*Pick #119 is worth 56, so anything after that would "work" in this regard.

I hate the stupid chart. On draft day they're trading for players not numbers on a chart. It was cool when first disclosed now it's just a pain in the ass other than a rough guide.

Its just a guide, obviously. Any chart of this type could never be 100% perfect.

That being said, the Pats picks should enable BB to move up into the top 10 (and draft Willis) if one of the teams from 8-10 was willing to trade out of their spot.

Belipioli does not like to draft lbs's high due to the complexity of our system. Unless Willis falls to 24, I dont see any way we trade up for him. Not unless the pats change there entire draft history.

No one knows what BB/Pioli are going to do. Just because they haven't done something in the past doesn't mean they won't do it - see last year drafting a RB in the first round.
