OUR TOP 10 DEFENSE
We are #7 in points allowed and #10 in yards allowed
We are a poor defense when the other team gets into the red zone
==================================================
We want the #1 defense and the #1 red zone defense. Fine!
HOWEVER, this defense is a top defense in that they don't allow the opponents to score. Part of the "success" is that our offense keeps the defense off the field.
===================================================
There have been many Super Bowl upsets when a great offense is stopped by a good defense that showed up with good schemes and a lot of heart against a team that doesn't see them often. Perhaps the problem is complacency on the part of the great offenses.
So what is the answer when building a team? Do you emphasize offense or defense? In the end, the choice is made in how resources are used, and what players are available.
It seems to be that either strategy can win for an organization. Of course, one tries for exactly what we have done: having a top 5 on side of the ball and a top 10 on the other.
=====================================================
We have a great offense. We have a top 10 defense. Barring an absolutely extraordinary team or team effort (the saints), we should expect to win almost all our games. Of course, health is often a real issue.
We need some health.
=====================
ONE NEEDED IMPROVEMENT
We need to finish games. We can't have an offense that is average in the second half. The defense is doing enough to win every game (except the saints). The offense needs to examine what happens differently when the ball is kicked off in the second half.
