Why couldn't the cheap bastards sign someone they know will get open down field like Victor Cruz.
Instead of betting on some jag having their career year all the time.

They spend as much money and waste enough time gambling on a bunch of has beens and have nots as they would betting on pure talent coming here and producing.

They would not be able to get away with this crap if they didn't have Tom Brady as the rock foundation center piece.

If you had a Sanches or Cassell aT QB with some of these signings you'd be looking at a lot of 6-10 seasons.

I hope he makes the roster...

I hope he has the greatest camp in the history of Pats receivers and still isn't good enough to make the roster.

Am I weird to believe that BB signed the wrong ex Bill? I like David Nelson. He could be a stud here imo.

You're not weird. Jones is a #5-talent at best. Unfortunately, we do not have a #1, #2, or #4.

2006 never looked so good.

Amendola's a #2, Jones could easily be better than a #5 WR, considering said player is typically a STOP.

Serious question....

Why is that? He's a 6'0 215+/- guy who's career YPC is lower than Welker's. If he doesn't make the roster, what are you thinking they'll be losing out on? Are you thinking the issue was Fitzpatrick, or something like that?

I hope he makes the roster because he brings a bigger, stronger presence on the outside to deal with corners in man coverage, and he's big enough to head across the middle and take a safety with him on medium to deep routes - something the Patriots lacked last season. Donald Jones reminds me of David Givens who was strong and capable of catching the ball in traffic with corners and big safeties.

I was a huge LLoyd fan - and I hope he comes back at a cap-friendly cost - but he and Branch were not going to contest balls with corners nor be that 25-35 yard over the middle route runner to force safeties to choose where to go with Gronk and/or Hernandez heading up the seam.

Presuming Jones can learn the Magna Carta they have for a playbook, I like this signing a lot.

So Jones is a #5 and Amendola is a #3?

Wrong.

Had a really good 2011 until injured.

completely off the radar now.

Had an ok 2011, never was injured as he played in all 16 games

injured first week of 2012

If they did not have Brady or any other Top-7 QBs, yes, the Patriots as currently configured would be in trouble. However, they would not be configured in the same manner (explosive offsense, adequate defense seems to be the goal now), so something about my aunt having balls...

Anyways, getting Cruz probably means giving up a 1st rounder (cheap, young talent for the defense) as well as 4 to 7 million in 1st year cap space as well as an 8 to 10 million dollar a year average on the out years. EXPENSIVE!

So Jones is a #5 and Amendola is a #3?

Wrong.

If one considers WRs #1 & 2 as outside guys, then Amendola is indeed a #3.

Jones is simply not worthy of being a #1 or even #2 on a team that is a legit SB contender.
He is a #4 in a worst-case scenario, #5 in a best-case one.

I think this guy will get cut in TC

Donald Jones against New England (4 games): 18 receptions for 319 yards (17.7 YPC) and 2 TDs (average: 4.5 receptions, almost 80 yards and 0.5 TDs).

Donald Jones against any team not wearing the Flying Elvis on their helmets (31 games): 64 receptions for 568 yards (8.9 YPC) and 4 TDs (average: 2 receptions, about 18 yards and 0.13 TDs).

What is he going to do if he doesn't get to play against the Patriots anymore? He may as well retire now.

Short of Edelman being re-signed, Sanders coming, a wr being drafted in the 1st or 2nd round and them bringing Lloyd back or signing someone like Heyward-Bey. I think he makes the team.

I think Jones will make the team and be extremely productive.

High Expectations:
827 yards, 6TDs

Low Expectations:
488 yards 2TDs

I think its reasonable to expect something between these two points if he stays healthy.

Jones has the potential to surprise if he gets his health in order and in tune with Brady. His combine numbers were really good. I compared them to some recent, similar sized WR, Emmanual Sanders, Kendall Wright, Reuben Randle and Chris Givens. The only one who was better across the board was Sanders (I can see why we may be interested). Of the others Jones was better than them all; not that he was better in every drill but overall Jones had better numbers than Wright, Randle and Givens. He also had a better 3 Cone than all of them (not as good as Sanders' exceptional time).

No clue if Jones will do anything for us but athletically he matches up well with these guy who went in the third round in general (Wright in the first).
