Dolphins eye Caserio for GM

That's not what he said. That's what you inferred. His former GM seemed inclined to disagree with your take, by the way.

Again here is the quote you infer what you will

"We've changed our model a little bit, because we wanted more than one of these," Irsay says, flicking up his right hand to show his Super Bowl XLI championship ring. "(Tom) Brady never had consistent numbers, but he has three of these,"

No, it's pretty clear. The Patriots, with the "eggs" approach, and the Colts/Broncos (or even Colts/Colts), with the "surround the QB with elite players" approach, both have made the same amount of playoff appearances in the years since Brady became a starter. Both teams missed the playoffs one year when their elite QBs were lost for the season, and both teams missed the playoffs one year when they just had a down year.

The difference in SB wins is the difference between Brady and Manning, and we can actually sum that up in the SB losses. Even when Brady wasn't playing at the top of his game, he was able to bring his teams back with late game drives that gave the Patriots the lead. Manning, on the other hand, threw a pick-6 on what could have been the tying drive.

Hell, if you want to round it out, you can toss the Steelers into the mix, since they're a stand pat draft team. 2 SB wins and a 3rd SB appearance for them.

Really, the 2000s have been great for demonstrating that at least 3 ways can win for you, and can do it very well.

You say that the Patriots have the best QB and best coach of all time, yet you ignore that when you make your claim about approach.

If you two are arguing about which team-management approach is better it seems pretty instructive (to me anyway) to look at those one year each without their "star QB". 2-14 and deliberately 'suck for luck' versus 11-5 and missing the playoffs on a technicality --- seems like a MAJOR DIFFERENCE and not just 'any which way can win'.

Also it seems that you gloss over or dont think about the NFL UNCAPPED YEAR at all. The Colts got so *****-AZZ lucky that the labor agreement and uncapped year fell when it did. Pay-me's contracts had them backed up against a wall and they got a get-out-of-cap-hell Free card. BB was managed to compete EVERY SINGLE YEAR and was prepared to meet the cap even in the uncapped year.

At least get your facts correct. The Pats ended up with 48 sacks, this season as the Defensive rebuilding is finally nearing completion. That is in the Top 5. The Pats have either led the League in turnovers or have been in Top 3 for the past four years.

Stats check, 22 sacks came against the AFC East. 1 2nd year player and 2 1st year players at the QB.

In a passing leauge Mayo has been in the NFL for 6 years and has 3 career INT's, Spikes has been in the NFL 4 years and has 2 career INT's, and Hightower has one post season INT zero regular season INT's.

Based on regular SEASONS we have a whopping 5 INT's out of the LB's. L. Davis the LB for the Bucs had 5 INT's in 2013.

A few twitter reports just now stating Miami has offerd Caserio the GM job..Will link it when I get home.

. @DougKyedNESN: The Dolphins have offered the GM job to Nick Caserio, and he has yet to accept, according to @NBCdianna.

Declining to be the youngest GM in the league will be tough.

Tell me over the past 6 years how often did teams attack middle LB's in passing games? I would say very rarely. They attacked thePats outside corners who were terrible.

The sacks stat is were I would expect it to be avg wise. 1 more per game vs division opp vs non division games.

Go back and watch the AFCCG vs Ravens I would start there. To help you out further Dennis Pitta vs Spikes. Did you watch the Falcons game this year by any chance? At the end of the game two LB's tackled him so he could not get out in the pattern. Did you watch the Browns game by any chance?

Jordan Cameron/Gary Barnidge 11 receptions for 170 yards and 2 TD's
Tony Gonzalez 12 receptions 149 yards and 2 TD's

Total 23 receptions, 319 yards and 4 TD's in two games!

Indications are that Nick Caserio will be staying with the Patriots. #patriotstalk

Ian Rapoport ?@RapSheet 1m
Nick Caserio has decided he’s staying in New England after being offered the #Dolphins GM job, per source

Is this the same Tom Curran who said Brady won't start due to knee inury, Cassel will not be franchised and Randy Moss won't be traded?

2 games out of 64+?

You are complaining about LB int's, again go back and tell me how often have they been attacked over the 6 yr period.

Caserio has been the director of pro personnel since 2008. Reports indicated that Caserio would share power within the Dolphins organization with head coach Joe Philbin and executive vice president of football administration Dawn Aponte. His role and power have increased within the Patriots’ organization. He is only below head coach/general manager Bill Belichick in New England.

Smart move, IMHO. Caserio knows BB and understands how to work with him. Trying to navigate in a 3-person troika with Philbin and Aponte (who apparently outed Jeff Ireland to Philbin) could be awkward and cumbersome.

Good break for the Pats. Happy to have him back.

I am really happy about this, but not that surprised. Belichick has always told his assistants to interview when they have the chance and it had to be hard to pass up the opportunity to run your own show, but I doubt he wanted to go to a division rival and would have felt like he was betraying Belichick to do so. Now they need to pony up a promotion and a big raise. Caserio is the guy i want running the Patriots when Belichick steps down.

Question now is whether he'll get a raise or new title in staying w/the Pats. I think he's probably going to leave after next season provided there's a more stable situation than the Dolphins.

Bad news for New England defense

My podcast co-host Mike Dussault of Pats Propaganda wrote this story awhile back, outlining New England's struggles in covering tight ends (ranked 21st in the league).

The onus for this would likely fall on Gary Guyton, who is the primary cover linebacker assigned to tight ends in the passing game. He struggled on Monday night against Miami Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano, who burned New England's defense for five receptions and 84 yards, including at least two passes that were right over Guyton's head.

The challenge doesn't get any easier this week.

As I wrote previously, the margin between Fasano and Gates is about as wide as the margin between margarine and butter. The label may say, "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!" but once you've sunk your teeth into it, you'll believe it's not butter.

Although coverage of tight ends wasn't New England's worst area of pass defense, but that problem could be exacerbated by Gates if he is able to get in rhythm with Rivers.

One major concern for the Patriots defense this year, and really for some time now, has been their inability to cover opposing tight ends.

While Brandon Spikes shines against the run, he struggles in defending the pass.(FILE:USPresswire

Here is a look of how tight ends have faired when facing the Patriots this season:

@ Buffalo: Scott Chandler 4 catches, 63 yards, 2 touchdowns

@ Baltimore: Dennis Pitta 5 catches, 50 yards, 1 touchdown

vs. Arizona: Todd Heap 5 catches, 62 yards*

@ Tennessee: Jared Cook 4 catches, 64 yards*

Total: 18 catches, 239 yards, 3 touchdowns

* led team in receiving

ANALYSIS: It isn’t a secret the Patriots have a hard time covering tight ends, especially over the middle of the field. A lot of this has to do with Patriots linebackers struggling in pass coverage. A perfect example is Brandon Spikes as he has been tabbed as one of the best run stopping linebackers in the league, but when it comes to depending the pass it certainly isn’t his strong suit and the reason why he isn’t a three-down player yet. Jerod Mayo is one of the best tacklers in the game, but is average at best in terms of defending the pass. Dont’a Hightower is very inexperienced when it comes to this and Tracy White hasn’t been able to get the job done in the times he’s been put in a situation to cover a tight end over the years. This could also play into why the Patriots brought back Bobby Carpenter this week. It also speaks to the safeties not getting the job done when asked to cover a tight end. Patrick Chung, who just a few years ago could cover tight ends with the best of them, has certainly seen his play fall off, while Steve Gregory hasn’t showed much in his short time in New England. This situation is something to monitor as the season goes on, especially if opposing teams exploit it more than they already have.

I guess this guy has it wrong too?

This shouldn't surprise anybody. That Dolphins job is toxic for a GM right now. Ross is screwing over his team by turning into Jerry Jones.

Again I ask what is the target rate? Who is the primary responsibility safety/LB.
