Larry Izzo played in the NFL at the position of linebacker for 14 years and played in 200 games. Never starting in a single one of them.

If you included kickers, LS, and punters Mort Anderson hold the record for most years/games without starting.

But not including K, LS, & P does Larry hold the record for the longest career as a backup/special teamer?

Apparently not.

Re: Does Larry Izzo hold the record?.....

several oldtimers are on that list, like Max McGee, who were always starters. My guess is that starts were not kept as a statistic in the 50s, 60s, and maybe 70s.

I don't know if I'd accept the list from profootballreference.com as gospel. They have Doug Atkins, a first round pick in 1953 and a Hall of Fame DE over 16 plus years as never having started a game........
Hall of Famers » DOUG ATKINS
It may be true but highly unlikely.
Call me skeptical....

Yeah there's like 25+ Hall of Famers on that list who never started a game lol.

Whatever that list is it's a lot wackier than that. Don Maynard and Buck Buchanan never started a game?

All I know is, for a 225 pound guy on a team that used 240+ linebackers exclusively, he could play a bit compared to the nameless "backups" we had at the position. He has an interception and 3 passes defensed for us and those aren't special teams stats.

Obviously, we didn't want him or any other of our backups in there.

What are the chances that for players who played in 50s, they have searched for games started, and the stat isn't available or says 0 because it wasn't collect then, and they have thought 'that HoF didn't start any games!'

Or 60's, and I would say the chances are excellent.

Also S.I. lists only his defensive (obviously not his ST) tackles and he has a career total of 17, all between 1996 and 2006.

That is quite likely, but the guy at the top of the list was playing last season.

Yes, Izzo played more games without starting than anyone who was not a LS, K or P.

Yeah, but the OP wondered excluding P, K and LS. And Binn is a long snapper
