Does Hernandez getting the boot mean TE is a high-priority need next year?

Or do you think the Pats will decide that what they have in-house is enough for next year?

Clowney!!!!

More seriously, it's way too early to tell, but yes, we should be paying more attention to the TE class. Shame that it was a pretty good TE class last year.

I wonder if we might trade one of next years picks for a TE. Any possible trade candidates?

I don't know if they'll want to make another attempt at the two tight end offense, but if they do, the guy I want is Colt Lyerla. He's 6'5", 240ish, and reportedly runs a 4.55. Not the change of direction athlete that Hernandez was, but a better size/speed guy. Austin Seferian-Jenkins is the better overall TE (in part due to the 20-30 pound weight difference), but I think Lyerla would be the better compliment to Gronkowski. Both Lyerla and ASJ are juniors next year.

I do wonder, though, if Belichick is more interested in having a versatile offensive weapon than a real second tight end, then I'd expect priority number one to be a run at Marcel Reece.

We may have the WE/TE already on the team in Mark Harrison

Really like Lyerla but he might go high. How about Trey Millard from Oklahoma. 6-2 and 259 FB that catches regularly, can block (saw him make three blocks that opened up TDs directly) and can break 60 yd TDs. If it's flexibility we're after ........

Considering the effect an X-factor TE can have on the offence would a 1st round pick be too much to pay for Lyerla?

The real question is, "Is a 1st for Lyerla the best use of that 1st rounder?"

Probably not. Assuming no character issues, he'd probably go mid-second at the latest. But BB rarely uses a first rounder on an offensive skill position player. There's only been 3 although two of them were TEs. I wouldn't have a problem with Lyerla in the 1st, just acknowledging BB's reticence.

Both Lyerla and ASJ are said to be major headcases. Probably nothing like Hernandez, but still.

That doesn't sound like an issue. Donte Stallworth is a big conspiracy fan, and the coaches loved having him in the locker room.

Did you see the link? How do you know there weren't any legit points in it?

Just having an opinion on a national event doesn't make one a problem, I would think Ahern's behavior would illustrate exactly what is a problem.

Don't shoot the messenger. Just said what the potential issue I'm aware of was. Only doubt I have was that Kraft and the Pats made a thing out of Sandy Hook. They may not like the potential for negative publicity involved in drafting Lyerla in the context of their support for Sandy Hook victims and AHern's propensity for shooting people.

Edit: this might not go down well for example:

The parents of the kids that supposedly died in the sandy hook situation are liars.” Lyerla deleted that tweet.

Is that an exact quote? Anyway, just tell the kid to shut his mouth and you should be ok, it might even lower his draft stock

According to this site, yes.

I'm a big Lyerla fan and think he might even be better than AHern so I'll take any drop in stock. I'd take him ahead of ASJ as things stand and he might see some slippage too with his drink/drive.

Well, that's certainly some rather poor PR on his part, hopefully he'll learn that PR is actually a big part of a pro career. That said, he's still a beast and I want him on the team.

I agree with you. Harrison is a VERY intriguing player. Can he take over the BIG receiver/small TE role of Hernandez's ? It's really up to him. Have an incredible camp and make it tough for the coach to cut him. It's really up to Harrison. Harrison really could be a matchup nightmare for a linebacker. 4.46 forty at 6'3 230, AND a 39" vertical ? Hell he could be a matchup nightmare for anyone.

What is his change of direction ability? I would speculate that it stinks, why did he post such mediocre numbers in a bad college? With that being the case what chance does he have in the pros?
