Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

But if a good QB is there you have to grab him, what good is having a good LT and receivers if you don't have a QB? No guarantee there's a better QB in the draft next year. You can do it either way but if the QBs there, take him and use the next year to fill out the rest.

That is one way to rebuild a team, but when you do it this way, the team is so bad that first year that it gets very demoralized and rips itself apart. Player leave, no FA want to sign, and coaches and other personnel get fired. It is happening already and it is gonna get worse unless Maye pulls off a miracle.

Mayo would need a Ben Johnson clone to save his career . No other way round. Considering Mayo is a hands off coach, not sure how much respect or leeway he will get. Hands on coaches only succeed in NFL.

Right now as everyone are saying , nobody is sure of what Mayo does as a coach. Not too apparent.

As long as Maye and maybe a few other young players prove to be "Cornerstone" caliber players, even if Mayo and the rest of the coaching staff are canned (perhaps including Wolf), then if a significantly better GM and HC and the rest of the coaching staff that are brought in can get the job done, then that will work for me (and I suspect most fans as well).

Given the size of the mess he inherited, and the rash of injuries they've suffered this year, Mayo has probably earned until at least the bye in 2025.

The only way I can see him getting fired before then is if he does stupid ish like Ime Udoka or Urban Meyer did.
Let me add one more possible route: Maye suffers a major injury this week.

It could not have been any worse, but the 2024 draft, unless Maye = Daniels, still Sucks.
There is no way to judge a draft without a QB and NE is void of that position as of this minute.

NFL drafts take 3 seasons to evaluate, so if Maye does not play well this season it doesnt mean that he is bust. Lots of QBs who went on to successful NFL careers had bad rookie seasons.

Or bad second or third years.

The bottom line is that exceptional good QBs make NFL coaches look like Vince Lombardi.

Andy Reid - Mahomes
Belichick - Brady
Shanahan - Elway
Dungy - P Manning
Coughlin - E Manning
Walsh - Montana
Johnson - Aikman
Noll - Bradshaw

Having an established team is a better way to introduce a new QB than having the young QB be the center piece. You could say it is the Brady model vs the Peyton model. Grabbing Maye was a calculated risk, if he lives up to expectations it will be worth it. Not investing enough in the OL makes it more difficult. If Maye can get through this year learning what is high risk vs the reward It will be a good year.

Please god let this happen! I can’t take another wasted season. The Pats will not be competitive until they hire a real HC.

If they don’t replace Mayo, they are going to throw away multiple seasons of having the Kraft’s wet dream of a good QB on a rookie contract.

Yes I am fully aware this is highly unlikely but the only way I see it happening is if he loses the locker room especially since he was hired because he connects with the players. The reason I started this thread (which I am sure many will hate) is because there seems to be some cracks in the foundation already.

Godchaux recently called out some nameless guys on the defense calling them selfish and insinuating there is some freelancing going on. I think most of us have surmised that he is likely talking about Keion White or Josh Uche. Guys looking out for number one already only a month in is a recipe for disaster.

Demario Douglas openly voiced his displeasure about his lack of targets and Brissett spoke to him on it. Douglas still seems to be pretty demonstrative on the field with his palms up in the air on occasion and per Evan Lazar some pretty visible frustration on the all 22. There was also rumors he was walking back to the locker room early before the end of the game on Sunday. To this one I say, "Who the hell is Demario Douglas to act this way?" There looks to be some talent there but he's a second year 6th round pick coming off a 60 for 650 year. He isn't exactly Calvin Johnson.

Three team leaders out for the foreseeable future in the last couple games. Bentley, Andrews, and the word is Dugger will likely miss some time. Three missing captains in the locker room of a young, struggling team with a young head coach trying to right the ship. If we already have guys not buying in like Douglas and the unnamed defensive players not having team captains around isn't going to help.

This is obviously speculation but I get the feeling that Mayo isn't on the same page with AVP and potentially Wolfe, on when Maye plays. Mayo when asked about the starter going forward after the Jets game responded with "I don't know" then quickly backtracked in his next interview with some nonsense about "watching the tape" which to me reading between the lines is he was told Brissett would remain the starter. Maybe I am wrong but Mayo has called AVP the "head coach of the offense" which could be read multiple ways but the fact that Maye isn't playing yet seems to point to AVP.

Alex Van Pelt. I know most on here were as underwhelmed with the AVP hire as I was but he seemed to be the first guy that actually say yes which obviously isn't a good thing. I did just mention how I don’t think him and Mayo are on the same page on the Maye timeline and I think some of that stems from AVP not wanting to reduce/change the playbook for a rookie with a different skillset. Not adapting to the starter is what got him canned in Cleveland last year. Van Pelt was able to piece it together with numerous journeymen quarterbacks and get solid results but when it came time to adapting his offense to a guy with a different skillset he allegedly balked and wanted to make Watson play his way. Obviously that isn't a power struggle he was going to win seeing how the Browns sold their soul for Watson but that isn't the approach I would want for our rookie quarterback with a vert limited supporting cast. In addition to any overall philosophy issues or starting quarterback debate AVP just doesn't seem to be a very good coordinator. The real all "All 22" tape nerds like Greg Bedard and Evan Lazar haven't loved what they have seen. Lazar basically has said AVP isn't getting guys in position to succeed with screens or misdirection to help aide the terrible offensive line. Bedard highlighted a play from Sunday on a toss play to Stevenson that lost 7 yards because he had Thornton in the slot trying to block a guy and got blown up.

The outside noise. I know everyone wants to pretend that NFL coaches and players just "ignore the noise" but we all know that isn't the reality. Mayo's new kinder and gentler approach with the media is what it is, but with more and more pitchforks starting to come out and some hard decisions on the horizon Mayo's feet really could be held to the fire soon. It doesn't help that his former coach and franchise legend is taking not so veiled shots at him and the organization. A lot of the media and fanbase are going to take Bill's word as gospel whether he has an axe to grind or not. I don't know think media scrutiny is going to be a huge factor in any decisions the new regime or owner make but it definitely isn't making things easier.

I know right now the thought of moving on from Mayo is extremely premature but so far things seem to be going about as poorly as they could. My issue is that the coaching staff he has to heavily rely on isn't very good and he may not even have the authority to dictate the personnel on the field. Combine that with locker room issues starting to bubble up when avoiding things like that was supposed to be Mayo's specialty it makes me pretty concerned with how things may go over the next 4 months or so.
The pats were supposed to be 0-4 in Sept and foiled it with a win. Any talk of Mayo going after 5-6 games was garbage. The team is playing hard for him. A few outliers like Keion White free-lancing for sacks got reeled in. Mayo is doing what BB failed at - relating to todays players that have changed materially since the days of the Rodney Harrison's of the world. AVP was pretty ideal for Maye as he was a QB and OC. And it's working very well. Did anyone expect it to be smooth and better when the pats installed a new offensive system with a lot of young/new guys in the mix? That offensive change is to simplify what was an overcomplicate McDaniel's offense designed for Brady, and as well, that old offense was hard to bring on new players. Especially receivers. It's a reason why so many teams are toggling to the west coast offense that is simpler. But that switch was way not something that would be done and polished perfect by week 1 or this year for that matter. There's still personnel changes needed to drive that new offense. Not a quick change for summer camp. Bottom line is the noise on Mayo is media and fan noise and in the drama-fiction camode. There was no coach or OC that was going to come in and win right away. They are doing a decent job despite a lot of challenges on personnel.

I think Mayo got one more year with the bears win and Maye showing upward trajectory. I feel AVP might also have bought himself one more year .

The wide receivers coach could possibly lose his job. Done zilch till date
Tight ends coach and special teams are Rockstars for now.

Covington is learning a bit now and the longhorn package was a nice wrinkle.

I would want to get a solid RB in 3rd or 4th round next year. Someone who can be more suited for zone runs. This is the guy that I want them to draft. 5'10 height but solid weight of 210 pounds . Runs under 4.4. with the height and weight combo should have a pretty solid core and be extremely shifty as well as great on short yardage positions.

His stock has a chance to go up with their schedule. Any of their opponents are capable of dropping a game.

Maye is Mayo's savior they can win three more games on this schedule. I feel like if we pull this one out on Sunday we'll put the NFL on notice. Maye has the makeup of a winner and we could play spoilers going forward. Five Wins would be nice Six wins is a Success we are only going up from here.

Yeah I think they’re going to be some pissed off posters because they steal a few more wins to get a worse draft position and Mayo staying. There’s no way Mayo leaves if he surpasses Bill’s 4 wins in 2023 unless they really want Ben Johnson.

I really really want that guy I have good feeling about him. But if we continue to win Mayo is safe.

If you think we could pry him away from a winning team that has talent, decent coaching, is first in their conference/division, and did I mention has talent.....I've got a bridge to sell ya! =) As great as it would be to have him here, I think he would stay put in Detroit. They would have to throw a ton of $ at him and I can't see that happening (as much as I want it to...). Then again, as a lineman in a previous life, I may have hit my head a few too many times..

I think Ben Johnson gets a job on Black Monday way too many underachieving Teams.

Nice handle.

Maye & Mayo, sounds like a holding company or law firm. We'll keep him around just for branding purposes!
