Does anyone know what player we lost to get pick 199 (Brady)

I had heard earlier that the Brady pick was for Tom Tupa.

Yes, the comp pick are for the previous year's UFA losses. The second list of players is correct, the first list (Ellison, Irwin, Israel...) was wrong.

On the Vinatieri comp pick, it has nothing to do with the "NFL valuing kickers" - it's all about his Average Annual Compensation in his free agent deal adjusted for games played. And the pick is not designed to offer a replacement-level player. You basically get a third for losing a top QB like Brees, and a fifth for a starting receiver like Givens - the following year.

To compare, the Pats got a fifth for losing Givens, a year out. So, using the one-round-per-year standard depreciation factor, that's like a sixth round pick. They traded a second rounder for Welker, perceived as a lesser player.

I of all people should have the answer to this question.

I just heard on the NFL Network that we selected Brady with a copensentory pick, I was wondering if anyone knew what player we lost in FA the year before that gave us pick 199 in 2000?

does it friggin matter?
