Dion Jordan Visit

I think that they are building their big board with the thought in mind of drafting a true outside linebacker because of what happened in the AFC Title Game with Ray Rice and Dennis Pitta.

They need an upgrade at weakside linebacker who can cover the running back and tight end while also applying pressure on the quarterback.

An improvement at that position could be in the cards and they may being doing comparables of prospects at that position. Plus, it is quite possible that they are doing their DD in case he lands in the AFC East.

Doesn't it seem unusual for us to schedule a private workout with a player projected to go in the top 5 of the draft when we hold the 29th overall selection?

[NFL Draft 2013: New England Patriots to host Oregon DE Dion Jordan, according to report]

Moving up? Mallett for #2 Jags or #6 Browns highly unlikely I'd assume? Any other thoughts?

I never remember us bring in a top 5 pick for the sake of DD in the past. Especially not a LB.

Could be to scout strengths and weaknesses for when he's on another team, could be checking out his mental abilities for when he's a free agent in five years. Could be checking his health to see if there would be any injury issues that cause him to fall. There are plenty of reasons other than them expecting to be within range to pick him.

Do you ever remember us doing this though?

The best comparison I can give is the Pats' predraft interest in guys like Tebow, Locker, and Dalton, all guys who went way too early for them to be of any value to the Pats. You can also look at Vernon Gholston and Pat White, who the Pats showed interest in, had "stolen" from right in front of them by division rivals, and then turned into terrible players.

Thanks Sciz! good information I was really surprised to see this scheduled so I was curious.

I wonder if the Jordan visit info was erroneous. Schefter tweeted a list of the teams Jordan is visiting and we're not on it, although I don't know if it's a complete list:

One of draft's hottest players is Oregon's Dion Jordan. Visited ARIZ, JAX, PHIL, still scheduled to go to NYJ, TB, BUF, TEN, PIT, DET, CLE.
