Devin McCourty to Retire After Super Bowl Victory?

This might be a shot across the bow letting the Pats know that he's not up to redoing his 2019 contract for a pay cut.
Or it could be a sincere off the cuff comment. What (football thing) could beat winning a ring with your brother?

Agree but DMC opened up his yapper and got the natives spun up.
I mean... it's not like Bill hasn't kept this team relevant ... in the mix... good ... great for 17 years. Can we just enjoy where we are at? I mean, other than Tom, they all retire sooner than later.

Who could we get to fill that spot?
Earl Thomas?
Promote Harmon?
Or will the force be strong in Obi 1

The Honeybadger is a FA. I believe the Pats wanted to draft him, but Arizona grabbed him a few picks earlier.

I agree in spirit with you but you gotta admit for DMC to go there was very interesting.

Wild overreacting going on here. McCourty's comment was innocuous. Of course it would be great to go out on top while playing with his brother. That doesn't mean he's seriously considering retirement.

Let's stop with the whole "No DMac, no problem" kind of stuff.

How many snaps did Harmon have in the AFCCG?

I'm not saying Harmon equals Devin. I'm saying it wouldn't be a big step down. I think at this point Devin is only slightly better than Harmon overall. As for the AFCCG that has to do with scheme. They wanted 2 safeties and 4 CBs. Of course they would go with McCourty over Harmon. He is the better option at FS right now if the game plan only calls for one. I'm not saying it wouldn't hurt the talent level on the field. I'm saying you wouldn't lose much from your starting FS spot.

Hopefully they can keep McCourty as a reduced rate as that would be preferable. If not they are better off letting him walk/retire and promoting Harmon. Then worrying about using that 10 million dollars to try to gain back their loses.

I don't disagree. You'd think a guy with his experience would know that it would be an issue in the media.

Devin, and good safeties in general, are underappreciated IMO. We're lucky to have had a nice solid foundation back there with McCourty and Chung for a while. I hope he stays for as long as he can play at this level

I am expecting a few retirements actually.....

But yeah, let's focus on Sunday...and after that the off season should be VERY INTERESTING. The more guys that retire....the more cap $$$ we have to spend.....

The possibility of McCourty retiring would be both surprising in the traditional sense of things and disappointing, but I definitely get it. I wouldn't be surprised if, given everything we've learned about CTE, a lot of guys start being inclined to retire younger than they might have in the past to try to keep as much quality of life as they can. If you're DMac, and you've made as much money as he has and won (hopefully) 3 rings, retirement just seems downright logical at that point.
