Have you seen the Devin McCourty video on ESPN's Sports Science? It's sick! McCourty run 80% as fast backwards as he does going forwards! Quick feet ...

it's very interesting, but with nothing to compare it to yet, you don't really know what it means.

(Paraphrasing)

"Devin McCourty has the kind of quickness that allows him to see the QB throw the ball, and change from his backpedal to closing on the play before the ball hits the line of scrimmage"

I don't know if other CBs can do this, but... looks good!

Edit: Also, top speed of 19.7MPH in football gear, so 80% of that going backwards would be roughly 16MPH. I think I'd be lucky to hit 16 MPH going forwards!

Cool. I run 80% as fast backwards as I do going forwards as well! Unfortunately, with my 7.45 40 time -- I still insist the field conditions were slow -- that's not quite as impressive as McCourty. However, this kind of cat-like quickness does allow me to backpedal out of the living room, grab a beer out of the fridge, and make it back in time for the next play.

For some interesting perspective, compare McCourty's backpedal in this combine video:
NFL Videos: 2010 Combine workout: Devin McCourty

with fellow 1st-round CB Patrick Robinson, taken 5 picks later:
NFL Videos: 2010 Combine workout: Patrick Robinson

(it's probably irrelevant though, because i learned from a lot of posters here on draft night that McCourty is just a special teamer and would have been available a round later. )

OK, im not gonna say im not impressed....those numbers and analysis are really enticing....hope they show something on the field

wouldnt mind having a revis of our own

that was amazing on thing that caught me was "devin's top speed was 19.7 MPH THE FASTEST WE RECORDED IN THE LAB"

Yeah, yeah, yeah..... All very true. It doesn't mean much in the lab. But I ain't gonna lie, I got a little bit of a chub watching it.

Perhaps it comes from watching us trot out the likes of Springs and Tatum O'Neil these past few years. Cool video. I'm excited to see what he brings.

That's what happens when people put more faith in media pundits and internet mock drafts than they do in the Patriots scouting system.

What amazed me even more were the number of people who complained loudly about using a fifth round pick for a punter.

Looking forward to clips of rookie mini-camp.

That was really awesome - although I'll admit when he said he was going to "fly through" I did have an Adalius Thomas Jetson flashback.

On the videos from the combine, Robinson looking like he was going in slow motion backward compared to Devin.

I have no idea how that dude can go 80% top speed backwards --- that's crazy.

Think Brady would go faster backwards with all thedropbacks? Sure doesn't go forwards very fast.

This McCourty kid can shift directions and turn on a dime. That backpedal is one of his best assets for sure. We've got a chance to have a very special backfield with Bodden, Butler, and McCourty.

Cool, This young man looks very promising. He's looks poised and polished, a really nice pick up by the Pats. Someone I will root for.

Good gawd.

If that kid devours film and develops some hands he'll be nasty.

So Devin can run backwards in the next Fast and the Furious movie.

Seriously i saw it earlier this year ... amazing stuff ... truly amazing how finely tuned an athlete's body can be.
