...would recognize that McCourty sacrificed dollars in his move from the cornerback position to the safety position...

I see no reason to somehow add to his compensation due to the fact that his original position was cornerback. His "reward" for switching to safety was still having a roster spot. After his rookie year, he performed poorly at CB. If he wasn't able to switch positions, he would no longer be on the team, IMO.
