I think Jimmy has some leverage here that nobody really has brought up yet. If you're JG the only way you're happy staying here and wasting another year of your career as a backup is if you know Brady is gone after next year. On top of that, if Brady IS done after this year, wouldn't it make sense for the Patriots to franchise JG for his true tryout season? With multiple open jobs, does it make sense for JG to start the holdout talk right now and force his way out of town via trade? Obviously the down side is being viewed as a petulant primadonna, but QBs have pulled worse in the past (Elway, Eli.) If he's a stud that'll be forgotten by week 4 anyway.

If I'm JG I am shooting my way out of town now so I can avoid potentially waiting until the 2019 season to sign that next contract. Get on a team that just invested in you and will be likely to give you a starter-level contract regardless of how year one goes.

I don't see it happening but I think it's interesting to view this from JG's perspective and see another scenario arise.

No. If he holds out, he doesn't get league service time credited and wouldn't be a free agent next year. He wouldn't be shooting himself in the foot. He'd be blowing his leg off.

I dunno, but maybe the fact that Brady and Garoppolo have the same agent might make that unnecessary.

Hes a backup so if he holds out how much would it really hurt us? If he holds out for the whole season then he wont get credited this year and he has to wait longer.

I'd rather get paid to sit on a bench than not get paid and sit on my couch

if BB tells Yee that JG is our long term guy so just chill for 2 years, do the Pats get fined for tampering with their own player? sounds about right for the NFL

You can't tamper with your own players, by definition.

Before I put the thread on ignore, no.

You can after a $5M investigation where they find a vague text about Jimmy needs pampering (the league will argue it's a typo, they meant tampering) and BB was generally aware and they will hire Exponent to "prove" the T and P key were backwards on the phone in question, except they can't remember which phone it was, then they will refuse to look at the phone but cry when the player upgrades his phone...

****

I thought I was over this.

**** you NFL.

That would be terrifying, who could they ever find to give hundreds of thousands of dollars to hold a clipboard? They're doomed!

If you put it that way I hope he holds out for the next five years.

Right, but if Yee failed to do what's in JG's best interests in order to suck up to the team then Yee could get in trouble.

What I'd love to know is what the rules are when an agent represents two players that are in a position where anything that helps one hurts the other.

(Now, of course I know the rule in practice is "do whatever gets me the biggest commission" , but I'm curious as to the theoretical rule.)

JG holding out would not work out well for JG

Maybe he'll hold out til Brady retires,v then he can step right in and be the QB for ten years with no wear and tear on his body, beautiful
Like Staubach, served 4 yrs in the Navy post Annapolis and came in at 26 but with no wear and tear and played 10 years at top level...

Holding out would be a great way to make significantly less money a year from now, and if he didn't report in time he'd just be our backup next year too. Assuming he wants to make as much money as he can next year, holding out on the last year of his standard rookie deal is a really, really bad idea.
