Courtney Brown - 6yrs, $45 mil, ? mil guaranteed
Michael Vick - 6yrs, $62 mil, $15.3 mil guaranteed
David Carr - 7yrs, $46.75 mil, $14 mil guaranteed
Carson Palmer - 6yrs, $49 mil, $14.01 mil guaranteed
Eli Manning - 6yrs, $54 mil, $20 mil guaranteed
Alex Smith - 6yrs, $49.5 mil, $24 mil guaranteed
Mario Williams - 6yrs, $54 mil, $26.5 mil guaranteed

Any guesses as to what the Raiders will pay? My guess is 6 yrs, $58 mill, $28.5 mil guaranteed.

Why did the Giants go from $14 mil to $20 mil?

Yep...San Diego made out big time on that deal. They got Philip Rivers plus
1st, 3rd and 5th round draft picks for Eli.

And Eli is not showing anything special to date...if he doesnt get much better, should he be released next year?

Yes, the only thing that would have softened the pain of losing to the Chargers in the Playoffs and then having them go on to win SB XLI would have been that "The Team That ARchie Manning Built" would have won the SB while Eli is still trying to prove that he's more than an average NFL starting QB.

and exactly one of those is currently a good deal.

top pick money is silly. the nfl should take a cue from the nba and institute a first round salary structure.

it's at the point where, if i was holding the #1 pick, i'd be practically giving it away. I'd swap with whatever team had the 5th pick and just ask for a second day pick.

hell, i might just sit on the pick and let #s 2, 3, and 4 pick before me. Then I'd grab whoever I liked best and pay him 30M less than whoever I would have drafted #1.

Bingo. I've thought the same thing. The system built to ensure parity might ensure parity, but not due to the drafting at the top of Round 1. I wonder if research would show that the team that drafts at, say, #5 improves more over two years than the team that got the top pick.

NBA draft picks sign contracts no longer than 3 years.

Gene Upshaw would love to have all draft picks sign contracts no longer than 3 years.

They PUNKED the Giants.

They PUNKED the Giants.

Did they grab Merriman with that pick they got the next year? One of the few teams to work the draft better than the Pats over the last 4 - 5yrs - that team has some talent. Now all they need is a coach who doesn't waste timeouts in 2nd half challenges of playoff games.
