There is intense competition at cornerback. We should be carrying five. I think we're all set with the top seven corners.

SEVEN LOCKS (this is what we need at the positions to play; they'll get all the reps)
Hobbs, Wheatley, Bryant, Harrison, James Sanders, Meriweather, and Lynch.

PICK TWO BACKUP CORNERS
Lewis Sanders, Wilhite, Webster, Spann, Ventrone, Richardson, Ty Law

I'd have to say Spann and Sanders, w/ Richardson nipping at their heels.

Given our history of injuries at this position, and the wish that we had more experienced defensive backs available later in the season, I think that there will be a strong temptation to keep both Sanders and Webster. One or the other seems more likely.

I have Wilhite next. We just don't cut 4th round picks in their rookie year. However, he could go on IR, giving the spot to Spann or Richardson as you say.

Oh, yeah, I'd love to see Wilhite make it. That would just feel like a lot of rookies out there. Maybe he'll get a real bad hangnail.

I'll say L. Sanders and Richardson based on a few snippets from last year (richardson) and this. Richardson just moved like a cornerback last year and Sanders did well against Baltimore and has the size to be the cb/s specialist.

I have no idea about the rest, so my opinion is almost meaningless.

Did chad Scott retire by the way?

Confusing the issue further, Spann seems to be more of a safety than a CB these days.

I'll say Wilhite and Spann, even though that leaves things a little light at true CB. The coaches are obviously OK with putting safeties at nickel CB.

Richardson to the PS.

When did the Pats sign Ty Law?
I didn't think so.
I doubt very much Ty will be coming to NE at this point.

What about Jimoh?

Yes, I forgot him. Since he is a solid special teamer, and has been for four years, he certainly has a shot.

TO REPEAT WITH EDITS

There is intense competition for the last two defensive back spots. The safeties should be set. We should be carrying five conres. I think we're all set with the top seven defensive backs.

I also agree that unless Wilhite goes on the IR is he also a lock to be on the 53.

Can't a player file a grievance if they are put on IR and they are not really injured? Is there word that Wilhite has an injury?

What about Shoate?

Just saying that to be annoying, I know nothing about him.

I just considered him more camp fodder, by he is a veteran, so why not? I'll edit.
