College Coach Calls Timeout, Then Retires.

Did you by any chance just read the subject of this post, and think that that the coach abandoned his team in the middle of a game? Rest assured, it wasn't that at all.

He called timeout with 4 seconds remaining in an already decided game in order to gather all of his players and give them the news. This man had coached the team since 1966. The players gave him a heartfelt round of applause, then he quietly walked off the field as they remained to shake hands with their opponents. No muss, no fuss, pure dignity.
I honestly overreacted and just said it to be funny thinking he pulled a Vonte Davis.

KU basketball coach Roy Willams had everyone gather at Allen Field house for a big announcement like he was going bid farewell after he was offered another job.

Then, after the place was packed, Roy proclaimed that he was staying. Tears of joy. What drama.

.

It’s far more likely he wanted to give his assistant coach 2 games of experience as HC

It's also entirely possible that at his age, and knowing this was coming, his assistant coaches have been doing most of the heavy lifting this year anyway. This may have just been a formality.

After 45 seasons! That's a man who didn't want a long season of farewells, and kept the focus on the young men he coached.

So simply and elegantly done, too. Literally walked off the field into the sunset.

The Brett Favres of the world might take a look at how a real warrior walks away.

If he had done that in the last game of the season, sure. But an unfinished season? That's far from being a "warrior."

He's 77 for chrissakes in a crappy last season....some of you have all the empathy of a Brazilian Horned Frog.

Nothing wrong with quitting before a crappy season is over.. that's understandable, but certainly not the act of a "warrior."

It’s like a captain of a ship, go down with it. Unless it was all planned out there is nothing honorable bailing on a losing team.

in my area, choosing a new coach is all about politics and drama, not much about actual coaching ability. The coach may have wanted to make sure the "committee" saw his choice in game situations. This may make sense if the last 2 games were thought to be winnable

I didn't read the article very carefully, but was this their last home game by any chance? That could have factored into the decision to do it two games early as well, but I don't know if that was the case.

Yeah it was their last home game.

I watched that 2 minute video with the announcers trying to figure out what's going on. It didn't show their sideline much but they did mention the whole team applauding him, and eventually you could see hugs and obvious admiration. The players certainly didn't react as if they had been abandoned.

Just amazing the different reactions to this OP.

Best wishes to the coach, the players like the decision.

Go Pats

I didn’t read the article either, just read the comments. My statements were just a general observation. We are a military family, we just don’t leave people behind. Maybe this was all planned, but again, seeing your team off to the end is the selfless thing to do.
