Patriots Player Departure Chase Winovich traded for Mack Wilson

McMillan showed promise before getting injured last year...McGrone I am looking forward to seeing as well.

That is uninspiring

We don't know what we have with McGrone, and he's coming off a bad injury

McMillan has been an injury prone bust to this point in his NFL career and he's coming off a bad injury

Mack Wilson is an unknown quantity but hasn't impressed in Cleveland

Tavai is not good enough to be anything more than a PS player. I've seen oil tankers change direction more quickly than this dude.

Terez Hall is another PS player at best

Noted that Wilson had a lingering knee issue and considered retiring from the game in 2020.......lets see how he does.

Not that Winovich is Von Miller BUT one way to protect your mediocre CBs is to send that guy off the edge with abandon (i.e. not worrying about that player's involvement in stopping the run).

Seems the Patriots are still going to place a premium on holding that edge.

Don't know, don't know, don't know, but I do know that a pass rush is the single most important thing about playing football, and that nothing else comes close. It's more important than a good QB, and the only thing that beats it is having a generational QB like Brady.

If I were Belichick and someone could guarantee a great pass rush for a consistent 10 years, I would take it over Joe Burrow or Matt Stafford, but I wouldn't take it over To Brady.

I don't know how often you can send a guy off the edge with abandon before it hurts you. You need a controlled pass rush where players get pressure but don't get caught out of position. That is what the Patriots did before the bye week last year. They got good pressure on opposing QBs, but the rushers still maintained their assignments.

That was the problem with Winovich. He wasn't disciplined. If he was out there every passing down, he was a weakness that could get easily exploited with a screen or an end around or another quick play going right at him.

He is young and fast and not your typical Patriots’ LB. He had a good rookie season. Definitely shows signs that Belichick is switching the defense to be smaller and faster and against the grain for him.
He is smaller and slower than Winovich. I know one is more of an edge guy and one is an inside guy but giving up on Wino after never really utilizing his skillset seems like a waste to me.

NE's D struggled to force opposing offenses into 3rd and long situations that would have allowed their one trick ponies....Rick Flairovich and UcheMomma...to get reps.

Wilson's base salary is about $1.5 million more than Winovich's. I just looked it up. The Pats might give Wilson an extension though.
Yeah, Wilson got the Proven Performance Escalator for playing more than 35% of the total defensive snaps in his first three seasons. By my calculation, Winovich missed that raise by 91 snaps, basically two per game.

I mean, Von Miller absolutely is horrid against the run, worse than Winovich. A lot of teams play this way.

Does this trade save the Pats any money/cap space?
No, it will cost $1.58 million (Salary- Winovich $965,000 Wilson $2.54 million) against the cap.

Edit- Sorry I was beaten to the punch

Not only that, but Josh Allen beat them as much with his legs as he did his arm at times, because the edge guys were staying disciplined with their rush. There were canyon sized gaps for Allen to scramble through. Wasn't just Wino of course, seemed like all the edge guys kind of got sloppy by the end of the season in that regard (maybe trying to do too much because of the injuries to the secondary).

Miller is very disciplined with his rushes. And he isn't horrid against the run. He just is a far better pass rusher than he is against the run. Miller doesn't run with reckless abandon.

You can argue the Pats didn't give Winovich enough of a chance to develop. That is fair. But what we saw of the guy, he was too much of a liability to be out there other than on select passing downs.

F’real? Well, ****ing come on man! One year prove it deal is okay, but a dude with lingering knee problems? Gonna have to look into that.

Its in the report on the NESN website. Hopefully he has put that behind him and he gets his chance

He’s not good at contain or setting the edge which Belichick places a huge value on. He sells out to get around the tackle. He’s good at it and will do damage there. But that’s all he does.

Exactly.. it's not because he's lazy. That's such a dumb hot take.

He just couldn't be more than an one-trick pony. Not his fault.

That's probably why you're writting theory on this forum ...

Yep, that list says to me: we aren't done here.

I'm glad they attempted to address the position, though. Not getting my hopes up but it'd be cool if the kid ended up showing something.

It was a joke. You don't recall the run on Rutgers players in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

I do, but as I recall it was Logan Ryan, McCourty, Duron Harmon and Steve Beauharnais over two drafts?

I get it's a meme, but it annoys me. Sorry, I'm just grumpy.

Nagging shoulder and knee injuries. Seems to be active (negatively) in social media. Last year of deal, reclamation project. Hopefully coming to NE will give him the kick in the ass that he needs. Gonna miss Wino for what I’d hoped he would’ve become, not what he actually was.
