Character and Integrity

Roger Goodell has now publicly assailed the character and integrity of Tom Brady for weak evidence of possible knowledge of air in a football more than he assailed the character of Ray Rice for knocking out a woman, or Adrian Peterson for beating a child until he bled.

Or Jim Irsay for clearly dealing (and driving under the influence of) drugs.

I imagine that Brady and Goodell's paths will cross again for a football related matter. I wonder how that will go. Goodell has found Brady to be guilty over an unfounded claim because when he looked into Brady's eyes and listened to his account, Goodell determined that Brady is a liar and a cheater. Man, I would love to see Brady knock him out.

Roger Goodell makes $40m a year.

He is the CEO of this.

Like other CEO's, he tries to stay in his job as long as he possibly can.

Because he makes $40m a year.

Right now, his reason-for-being is about powering a false narrative into the public airwaves.

If he fails, he loses his job.

This all makes ultimate sense for Roger Goodell. Most people without a conscience would do exactly what he is doing.

The NFL owners, being titans of industry, always tend to confuse leadership with the institutions they run. This is why people didn't really bother to notice that Lehman was being run into the ground (by people who were getting paid ungodly sums). What I mean to say, leaders and CEOs are not the institutions. They are people who RUN institutions. Temporarily. For as long as they can. For as long as they can stay at the helm. And hopefully get a Golden Parachute.

So the owners are blind to the damage being done to the institution, because the owners are like Goodell in other industries. They are leaders. They pat themselves on the back for their stewardship of institutions. They don't really see intrinsic value in the institution itself absent their "Masters of the Universe" outlook on life.

1. One thing for certain, Goodell's presence for the Pats first game (if he dares to come) will be the kind of Drama networks can only dream about.

2. For most teams this kind of distraction would be a real negative, BUT with the Pats, it could be used as the perfect motivation to shake off the post-superbowl doldrums. No sports team I can remember is better prepared to compartmentalize and focus on the task at hand. There will be a lot of mediots who will make the attempt to shake this focus. All will fail.

Remember that Goodell believed Rex Ryan and Bob Westhoff when they said that they had no knowledge of an orchestrated attempt to trip opposing players on the Rats' sidelines, but he didn't believe BB's explanation of Spygate and he doesn't believe Tom Brady now.

Sorry, I guess that doesn't help much.
