His basic point is that the pass defense record is historically toxic for any team with championship aspirations. I might have to agree, as of RIGHT NOW... good thing the season ain't over yet.

Its also Impossible for Patten to make this team.

and yet the Green Bay packers with the 2nd worst passing yards allowed can be superbowl champions??? I dnot get why this fact is constantly overlooked on the packers.

they are a mirror image of the patriots essentially.

anyways, anyone who has watched the last 2 pats games can see that the defense is improving. a better pass rush, and they seem to be playing less man to man and more zone which is taking away the big throw

Sounds like he hasn't seen "Wilfork Island"

We're 5-1, we've beat some good teams, and our defense has been drastically improving the past two weeks as personnel gets healthy and back on the field.

He's always on WEEI and he's quick to point to SB42 when our defense betrayed us - but come on, that team was a helmet-catch away from being the greatest team of all time.

exactly! Love how the pundits claim a defense is bad after 5 weeks, strictly based on yardage.

To quote a very smart man....

"Its all about how you are playing after thanksgiving"

Damn. What am I going to do with my Sundays now? I mean, watching the games would be pointless now, wouldn't it?

This just in.......

It will be "impossible" for Kerry Byrne to be a legitimate sports reporter based on his limited intelligence and lack of depth to his story.

I'm willing to bet, he's probably watched perhaps part of 1-2 games and is centering his prediction on the stat sheet alone.

As long as Rob Ryan isn't scheming against a Brady offense every week they should score about 30 a game for most of the season,If they can score 30 on average in the playoffs, the defense can be 20th ranked and still win a SB.

The key to beating the Pats is not to beat the Pats defense with big plays from your offense, but more or less to shut down Brady and get in his face.

In other words,an opposing smothering defense is more likely to beat the Pats than an opposing powerhouse offense.

That's fine but if true you must also say the Packers have zero chance at repeating given their defensive ineptitude against the pass against easier offensive opposition.

When a team gets "God Status" it's a big distraction, constant interviews and external drama it seems.

I hope every pundit says we have no chance and Brady's n old coot.

He's right; football is a game of absolutes, with no new precedents ever being set.

OTOH, I do think the board should adopt the style of using "Linky poo" for all links.

I'm fairly sure that the next pundit who calls him that will be the first.

last week, our defense won us the game when brady was having an off day...hopefully that was a turning point and they can build off that win and move forward and continue to improve...especially with mayo coming back possibly after the bye

one thing ill say that makes us a better team against these good defenses is the commitment to the run

Umm . . . I think the OP's point is that this link = poo.

I would shudder to use "linky-poo" to link to anything dealing with GRONK.

The difference between the Pack and Pats is that GB is starting to win decisively. Last three games, wins by 26,11, and 21 points. Their D has been a steady case of improvement....with point given up of 34, 23,17, 23, 14, 3.

It's hard to use history as a gauge. Clearly, the league has evolved into a passing league, with much less emphasis on defense as necessary to win (kind of a bummer, but "it is what it is," as they say...)

Last three games, against Denver (1-4), Atlanta (3-3, good team), and St. Louis (0-5). I wouldn't crown them yet.
