Patriots Injury News Butler to IR

He was depth in that they were an injury or 2 away from maybe needing him.

They lost two CB's in one day and while neither would currently make the team, at least one was Plan B or C.
Except they have to cut down to 53 soon and Butler wasn’t good enough. They have better CB’s to try and sneak on the practice squad.

I dunno about that, he looked pretty decent.
In preseason? No, he hasn’t. He hasn’t truthfully looked good since 2016, he still showed flashes of what made him good.

His story is an underdog story, it will be a Disney movie one day. But he was an average athlete who relied on perfect technique at his absolute best. Now that’s gone…

The annoying part is I lose the “Surprise Cut Thread” bet on a technicality.

Expect the Patriots to work on a injury settlement and he retires and joins the coaching staff.
Umm. « and joins the coaching staff » ? I think that’s a huge NO. Love me some 2014-15-16 Butler. But…

The cornerback depth chart just got thinner.

They take a 2.2 million cap hit I believe.
Why in the world would they take a cap hit? He wasn't cut, he was just placed on IR. He still has another year on his deal here.

And even if he WAS cut, they'd gain cap space, not lose it.

While JoJu and Butler were likely not making the 53 this is still a loss for NE:
1. they lose some familiar depth both could provide from PS (elevations) + high scout team value (if they would accept the offer)
Butler did not need to go through waivers and Williams could probably make it.
It will be more difficult to bring any of the remaining corners to PS, maybe Mitchell but he would probably get a gig elsewhere sooner than Butler and Williams. There's Hafford but with very limited experience. So they will probably have to bring some new guys in in September for PS..
2. they fail to gain some handy cap space (esp. 2022) they would get by cutting them

On IR before deadline means done for year. (8/30). To return ya gotta be on the 53.

So either it is a very serious injury, or the Pats didn't think he was going to make the 53. Otherwise they could have kept him on the roster and IR-ed him after the cut-off date.

Right now, only the top 51 cap figures are counted against the cap. After final cutdown, every cap figure counts against the cap including players on IR. Essentially, with both Butler and Williams going on IR, the Patriots lost roughly $3.5 million of cap space compared to if they had been able to cut them.

They didn't even have to do that.

They could have Hoyer/Brandon Bolden him.

He didn't need to clear waivers. They could have stashed him on the practice squad the first month.

Not really, Butler wasn’t making the roster anyhow. Since we drafted the two rookies, Butler was going to at least need to beat out Wade (barring a redshirt situation) and Mitchell’s emergence outta no where was the nail in the coffin for Butler.

It was a feel good story but I’m ok with Wade and Jack Jones taking his practice snaps. Still should be a good mix out of vets (Mills, JJ, Mitchell) and young guns (Marcus, Jack and Wade).

Made the mistake of listening to Felger and Mazz (with Bedard) on my way home from work and Mazz had Wade as a “down” (3 up and 3 down) so far in camp, mainly because one pass breakup hit him in the back of the head against the Giants. That putz doesn’t have a clue.

Butler was a perfect candidate for the new veteran practice squad rule.

He was essentially a shadow roster player.

You never know about these situations. He might have been a good guy to be just hanging around on the practice squad.

Waddle got out of bed last year and was a big player in the Super Bowl.

You have to pay players on IR

At least you admit it was a mistake.

Edit: I make the same mistake nearly daily leaving work, and I probably don't last 90 seconds.

I wonder if either Butler or Williams will eventually be waived from IR with an injury settlement.

It sucks both are gone, but neither were a lock to make the final 53 man roster. It just makes selecting which CBs to retain a little easier.

I’d say yes, helps them catch on with another team if they want to continue to play. Both guys have been good soldiers.

I think that would be nice fantastic…but it’s not likely

Butler was last seen, before going on ir, at the foxboro stadium lost and found dept trying the find the steps he lost!

He was cooked, but I do not blame bb for seeing if butler had any tread left on his tires.
