I don't think Bill Belichick is pleased with Mac Jones being with the Patriots. Enough has been written about why this is. When I first saw that Jones went outside the Pats organization, I told myself; Bill would be pissed and grumpy about this.
Since Bill passed on, Jimmy G. Lamar Jackson is not a consideration. I believe Bill feels stuck with Mac Jones unless an option becomes available that is not there today.
Bill knows he has a great OC in Bill O'Brian. Bill also knows the limitations of Mac Jones passing the ball and his slowness in reacting once he gets the snap from the center. Bill also knows about his terrific running back in Rhamondre Stevenson. So he will put together with O'Brien a primary running offense along with a solid defense to get into the playoffs. Getting the ball quickly out of Mac Jones' hands and into a running back or a short pass that Jones can't screw up to a WR that moves the ball forward after the catch will be the offensive strategy for this coming season. Every move Bill has made this offseason supports the process I outlined.
Only if the Pats can pick up a decent potential QB at 14th in the draft or some experienced QB becomes available will this offensive strategy change.
Bill knows he has Zappe, who needs some additional time before he is QB1, but can probably do better than Mac Jones did in his rookie season, standing by ready to step into this running offense and could do better than Jones.
So as of this point in time, I think we, the Pats, have the defense in place and, as of right now, the offense with the proper offensive strategy, along with a great coaching staff to get the Patriots into the playoffs.
Anything can happen in the playoffs.
