As with many others nearing retirement, the nosedive in the economy may be wreaking havoc with many athletes' and coaches' retirement plans. I know I'm further away from retirement than I was a year ago, and that is undoubtedly true for some players who would otherwise be hanging them up. I read Tedy's book, and he has been careful with his money, but there aren't many people who are better off now than they were a year ago.

This is one of my rare I Told You So moments, albeit a weak one because a lot of you agreed.

I never thought there was any real doubt about him coming back. Given how repetitively vocal he has been about "checking your ego at the door", I thought there was no doubt he'd want to come back in any role they'd take him in. And it's also always been clear he had as much to offer on the field, let alone in the locker room, than other guys they wound up deeming suitable to have on the roster.

That's part of it too. Very few football players make so much money that they truly wouldn't value earning more (it happens more in other sports with smaller rosters), and he's obviously not one of the few.

When your lifetime earnings are a lowish eight-figure sum of money, as is the case for Bruschi, each additional million still has value.

I am sure your right about him not being better off now than he was a year ago but I am not sure that means he has to play another year. I don't just mean the obvious he has earned enough for a lifetime already. Likely he would have a job in Gillette, and obviously he wouldn't get paid the same but its there. Also he will still be able to earn money thru endorsements around here for a long time and being retired would allow him to do more. He likely will never recieve another years salary like he is set to if he returns but there is plenty of opportunity out there for Teddy to make money after he choses to retire. A couple of million is hard to walk away from regardless of the economy.

depends on waht happens to cassel and how many draft picks we have for this upcoming year

if we have a lot, then i think we will have to let go more of our veterans (ie. rodney and bruschi) in order to incorporate the rookies

we have a LOT of young players from last year, and if most of them can make the team, then we already have too many in the final roster, and cant fit any more players period

the older players will go b4 we release young players w/ potential

Riess just posted in his mailbag (the last question) that Rodney wants to come back. Bruschi has one more year so I can see Rodney coming back for a 1 year contract, and then both retiring the year after. That would be a nice feelgood story, but I hope they'd be willing take a backup role.

I may be in the minority here, but seeing how cruel SB XLII ended, I want to see Bruschi, Seau, and Harrison get a ring together, and want them to be back on the team in 2009 (albeit in reduced backup roles).

I see us drafting two! An ILB high, and an DE--> OLB candidate at late two or three, just like Crabel.

That would give them Mayo, AD, Vrabel, Guyton, Woods, Crabel, Colvin, Redd, ILB, and DE/OLB. Thats TEN... All we ever carry is NINE, and no room for Larry, Alexander, or Tedy, Ruud, Craig, Robertson and whoever else. Sorry rosters full. Perhaps Player/Coach? Redd still has PS eligibility...

Rodney has been "too slow" for how many years now? All he does is make big plays. I look for FA signings in the secondary, but right now their best safeties are Meriweather and Harrison. Vrabel was playing hurt. I do not expect him to be beaten out by Woods or anyone else now on the roster. Maybe these guys can share more playing time with some of the younger players, but speed for the sake of speed is not what we are looking for (hello Bethel!)

He is more of a coverage LB but I don't recall him getting picked on in the run game. There were a few games that we struggled against the run but I don't remember anything that would make me blame Guyton for it, if anything I recall it more being Warren's injury and later Seymour's that were the areas that struggled against the run.

Bru at 255 LB is a little bit on the light side for a SILB for 3-4 BB runs. When guyton came in at 230 LB he had to drop in coverage or rush end with speed .He was more of a safety[tank,rodney] role than LB. We need someone on a bit bigger you cannot ask a 230 LB guy to take on nasty 300-310 gaurds coming into the back field or a pulling gaurd.
