Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

What is it? Could have gotten a pick 5 picks sooner? Let's see what it is first.
Agree that we need context. 5 picks is one thing. A full round is completely different. Guessing we will never know.

What's the downside of NOT making this trade? Let's say he plays poorly in the preseason and gets cut, never gets in a game again or if he does he plays poorly and he never as any trade value again. All you ever miss out in that scenario is moving up from the top of the 7th to the bottom of the 5th. That's the value you potentially squander, and it's pretty minimal. Not nothing, but minimal.

IMO, if they saw any developmental potential whatsoever with him, it just doesn't make sense to do this deal. What if Maye regresses terribly. What if he gets hurt and misses significant time or just isn't the same anymore. What if there's things on tape the league catches that he can't overcome. Don't get me wrong, I'm high on Maye but you just never know 100%. I'm skeptical that in those scenarios Milton would ever show in that opportunity that he's the guy, but again you can never be 100% certain. He clearly has physical talent. I just wouldn't have given up on developing him for such marginal value. Especially with my expectation that they'll just end up drafting someone else to fill the same role probably around the same draft slot value they got back in this deal.

Now I am hearing a suggestion that it could have been pushed by Drake Maye, after Kraft made the comment last year “maybe we have two QBs.”

Mike Reiss apparently referenced QB room dynamics.

This trade is going to be discussed a lot and could be a distraction.

I wish we could roll the click back and this trade didn’t happen.

Maybe this is part one of the trade and Dallas overpays to move up to 4 to get there RB Jeanty infront of the Raiders

wishful thinking Micah Parsons lol

Happy he is gone. He might have some potential, but if he started camp doing pretty good things, the noise would be insane. Thank god.
That would have been terrible. It would result in his trade value being much higher.
Drake Maye is not Patrick Mahomes…yet…
Many Pats fans treat Maye like he is a 7 time all pro.
He has won 1 game

Leave options at qb until Maye has accumulated bigger sample size

Has anyone, myself included, considered that Milton may not be able to run JMcDs offense fully? We all just assume he's gonna be legit after going against the Bills 3 string guys who were focused on the playoffs. Perhaps they determined he was not a good fit for the offense?

This is probably the biggest thing being ignored. The EP system is very cerebral. Drake is a smart football player and will be able to process it. Mac Jones was very cerebral, but he could not adjust after Josh left. I don't blame him for that, and now he is broken. I hate this trade and I love Joe Milton, but if there is one thing Joe is not, that is cerebral. He is a pure athlete that can rely on his rocket arm and legs to make plays. It is so fun to watch, but at the end of the day that is not the EP system that recognizes pre-snap formations and adjusts with concepts rather than routes.

That's what I've been saying. They had NO reason to trade him this year. And, even if he wanted out, too bad! You keep him one more season and if he develops, then you can get more. This trade (especially the "compensation"), was ridiculous.
While I definitely understand where your coming from... the team likely did this for Joe and his career. He has told the organization since last season he would like to go somewhere to have a chance to start.. he never felt he had thst chance here for obvious reasons. So this is Vrabel doing him a solid. Once Dobbs was signed it became more realistic.

How do you know Milton is not “cerebral”
This is pure unsupported wild speculation

Great points.. Josh's offense has been known to be a bit complex.. let's see if as he says Morphing it around drake's abilities.. he and Williams are supposed to be speaking today.. I'd like to know if he's going to talk about his offense..

They aren't going to run pure EP in 2025.

I've definitely considered. For this value, I just wouldn't have made that determination upfront. I place a lot of value on having a good developmental QB pipeline. Especially because as much as we love ours, he's still not proven and he had some injuries last year along with a playing style that's conducive to them.

We moved up from #217 to #171. That's not nothing, but it's hardly a lot either. Especially one month out from the draft where it's not even like there's a specific prospect with a high grade we can say we're doing it for. If you bring Milton to camp and he's a puddle trying to run McDaniels' offense then you cut him and that's the value you missed out on. It's not something I'd lose sleep over. He has physical tools and you saw it translate for one meaningless game against third stringers. I'm doubtful he'll ever be anything but I'm also not 100% sure he won't. I'd have wagered on his development over cashing in for this now.

A 5th??? I'm almost as annoyed by this as the stupidity of the Orange Moron.

Likely Prescitt will get injured and miss a few games this year
Milton will get a chance to start with Lamb as his WR1
I will bet this trade will be viewed as a steal for Cowboys by end of year

Kind of wanted him here for at least one more year. His running playstyle would really mix it up for the opposing team if Drake gets hurt.
