Recent Brady newsletter (that I didn't even know he had)

Relevant passages:

"It was a creeping decision that lived passively in the back of mind for [two to three] years," Brady said of when he thought he'd hit free agency for the first time. "Until March of 2020 when a whirlwind of a few days made me realize that a decision was coming sooner rather than later."

...

"After twenty years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise," Brady wrote. "It was the kind of tension that could only be resolved by some kind of split or one of us reassessing our priorities."

...

Mostly only posting this because 5 years later some folks still like to put makeup on this and act like it was only about money and contracts and that the rift between the QB and the coach was fake news that didn't really matter.

People are not perfect. All you had to do was ask.

Actually if you read the full newsletter and not the summary, you’ll note it was multiple things:

- Belichick rift as noted
- talent on the team — that was clearly spelled out even if not explicitly said, didn’t want to go through another rebuild
- was sick of the weather

These were the specific things he mentioned, but noted he had 20 or so items he considered, with money being one of them but not a huge priority.

I think Tom is being brutally candid here and I don't disagree or take issue with anything he said.

I think initially he wanted an extension. I think he wanted to stay. Kinda like staying in a troubled relationship that was never going to get better. Sure he played footsies with Ross in Miami and ultimately saw the big picture and felt leaving was best. I think Bill knew that and I wouldn't be surprised if Bill said something similar but along the lines of needing to rebuild, etc.

Ugh.
Drake and Mike please hurry up and win multiple Super Bowls so we can discuss some different types of drama.

(For those that don't appreciate my smart-ass humor, I already know that I have the option of not clicking on this thread. )

Nothing surprising about this at all? This is just a rehash of what went on.... the tension started in 2017 when we didn't offer Brady an extension...then we eventually traded Garopollo....then the Butler benching.... then Giselle/Brady go to Kraft's house to air grievances.....

Honestly, this makes the 2018 title team all the more impressive, IMO.

From there, Gronk retired.... and we tried the AB experiment....

By 2020, Tommy sees Godwin/Evans/Warm Weather/Happy-Go-Lucky Coach vs. Edelman/Cold Weather/Tough Coach.....

I mean...can you blame Tommy?

Two other factors were importantly significant here: 1) the Gisele effect, and 1) the Guerrero (aka Dr. Quack) effect.

Let me just preemptively say FU to the Bill haters that will obviously pile onto this even though that's not what Brady is saying.

I'm going to try and sit this one out but I prematurely apologize for when this train wreck inevitably pisses me off enough to start fighting everyone.

Seems almost inevitable with the amount of time they spent together over all those years. Sometimes small differences become huge rifts and the best option is a split.

Bill haters are as equally annoying as the Bill zealots.

Like Brady said they had 20 great years together and either Belichick needed to change or he one of them needed to leave. Nothing wrong with the way things ended

I think their tension started after the Branch trade. The losses to the Colts in 2006, Giants 2007 and Giants 2011 with the defense collapsing on the final drives were really getting to Tom. There was definitely some resentment brewing during the 10 year drought. In fact, just watch clips of the Seahawks game in 2014 when Kearse made the catch. You cold see defeat on Tom's face as the defense was on the verge of another collapse. Had Butler not made the INT and the Seahawks won, I think Tom leaves or the question of whether the Pats should move on due to Tom's age with Jimmy G taking over. Then we later have the Eagles Super Bowl where Zolak just said on his show that there's audio of players including Tom Brady asking why Butler wasn't playing? Starts at 8:38.

It is interesting how the three major personal and professional relationships in Tom's life disintegrated in a matter of a few years apart.

There is one surprise in all this looking back.

The Guerrero thing just never gets mentioned.

Those who watch closely KNOW it is about Guerrero.

You could tell from player reactions to what reinstalling Guerrero meant to the coaching staff (torpedo-ing their authority), you could tell what it meant to Gronk who was frustrated to the point of retirement, you could tell what it meant to Brady who became angry and animated in the Dynasty series when the subject of Guerrero's reinstatement came up.

We don't know what it meant to Belichick but imagine how he reacted to the usurpation of his authority.

Guerrero = Yoko Ono

Feel free to ignore the thread if you don't like the subject matter. Can't stand the whiny Belichick fans
You are the problem. Someone says they just don't want to talk about this anymore after 5 years, and having gone through 2 coaches now post-Bill, and your reaction is to call them a "whiny Belichick fan".
