Julian Edelman took the ?back road? to the NFL - Sports - The Boston Globe

For proof, said the father of the Patriots’ No. 1 pass catcher and fearless punt returner, there was Julian Edelman’s first year with New England. By his dad’s count, the then-23-year-old Patriot rookie stayed on the field that 2009 season with a medical mishmash that included four hernias and a blown adductor muscle.

And that was on top of the broken forearm.

BTW . . . there's an amusing anecdote at the article's end. If he hasn't already, I suspect Jules is about to get pranked courtesy of his old man.

He's a great up and coming talent, and has made some nice strides as a WR.

Of course he has to deal with the same injury concerns as Danny Amendola, which is just one more reason why I'd prefer to see them both here for the next couple/few years together.

We already knew he had a bit of a stage-door father, but some of those "we" and "us" quotes made me sit up and take notice.

So we figured, let’s get up there and learn now to play football in the cold.’’

To be a professional athlete these days practically requires this kind of interest and mentorship, whether it's your father or not.

Coaching little league kids, two things amaze me. The interest that the pro coaches (and by pro I mean club coaches who are paid) take in certain kids because of obvious athletic ability, and then the commitment of the parents. I personally don't think either is healthy. I've had my 7 year old daughter recruited to play on a club team affiliated with Major League Soccer. It's local, but I've been to their practices. They are run like a machine, and the parents are serious, and they travel all over. We don't have that commitment as a family, and we don't see the point, but out of the 60 girls in that club who give it their all, maybe 7 or 8 will earn college scholarships, and 1 will become a pro.

Can we stop calling him Minitron? I know Brady said it as a joke, but Edelman's done too much for this team to earn a humiliating name like that. Why not Ultratron or, I dunno, something better?

Yeah, it's a play on his height, but it's also comparing him to Megatron, which is a pretty big compliment in my book.

because its a good name.

But i wouldn't be opposed to calling him smoothietime

After reading the very good SI article this week about him (which has probably been discussed, and which I can't seem to find a link for), I think we should call him by old his old nickname, Sunshine

Its a term of endearment likely due to the height differential.

There's also the timeless Edelperson or even The Person!
