Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

We had to resign him .

We would have been absolutely screwed if we let him walk. That's the reality of it. Welcome back Bodden!

If that was the "reality" of it, he wouldn't have flown to Houston.

Or the Patriots planned to match what they were offering. So yeah its still is "reality'

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

Its clear the Pats let him go out to find his value for us to match it.

About what?

Nice work tonight Jack, Marcos had me scared.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

Is there anything on Bodden's twitter, apparently there is someone updating it for him, brother, friend or something!

No, he hasn't posted since this AM. But everyone has their sources. This is likely a case where the agreement in principle confirmation is coming from the team or the league (teams often submit these contracts or portions of them prior to signing to make sure they are fully CBA compliant) and the player has likely indicated to friends or teamates that he's on his way back since he has left Houston and there is no announcement of plans to continue on with his visits to Seattle or Pittsburgh, so... Lombardi's sources are pretty good, he had the Cassel contract about six weeks before it was finally announced. He's affiliated with NFLN and he's tight with BB so... And I'm sure Schefter's sources include the same league sources plus some players.

Rumors that Brady had a deal in 2005 leaked early and then when Tom and his rep saw some of the split bonus language there was a little bump in the road while that got hashed out. But the deal was agreed to in principle for several weeks and league insiders knew it because they'd seen portions of it.

Great news, looks like it will be official tomorrow.

Yeah, it's like we dodged a bullet. He may not be an all-pro, but the dropoff without him in the lineup to start the season could have been devastating.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

Its clear the Pats let him go out to find his value for us to match it.

Sometimes they let them go out to find out their value is what we were offering. We had offered Givens $18M over 5 years and Houston was offering $18.5M. He was torn because he wanted to return here if the $$$ was essentially the same while his family wanted him to play for their home town team. Miami sniffed around and never made an offer, and I think Cleveland was sniffing as well but backed off because they were convinced he was using them to drive up the price to Houston or NE. Then Tennessee jumped in at $24M and he really had no choice...because Tennessee was prepared to wildly overpay. Keels likely knows as of tonight that neither Seattle or Pittsburgh wanted in at any more than he already had on the table, and agents don't usually send their players out to additional visits (except in cases of player preference) unless they already have assurances there is a dollar more on the table.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

I like Bodden, so I'm glad it seems like they got it done.......plus the more quality we have, the less we need to rely on Wheatley and Wilhiite!!

Hopefully the deal is a decent one for the team.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

Is it possible to sign with the Pats and then not sign with them? Felger will have a field day with this tomorrow.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

Thank God!!

I think that this is absolutely correct. I'm glad he's back with the team, and I sincerely hope we can resign Faulk too.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

That's what it seemed to be saying to me, and I'd guess that his agent just wants to let everyone else know that they're still all ears if someone comes in at the buzzer and beats the Pats' offer (which, at this point, doesn't look like it'll happen). It's definitely not ideal, but it's good news for sure.
Remember how we got Rodney? He and his agent were in the Raiders FO about to sign when the agent got a phone call from the Pats. They left the mtg without signing and flew from SF to Boston on the redeye. Had no luggage because they only flew up from San Diego to sign the contract to which they had agreed in principle. Instead he signed with the Pats. He too had an agreement in principle.

So Bodden's deal is not a done deal. Yet. It is an agreement to sign a deal, but as the agent says, there is nothing official.

Lets hope that no other suitors change their offers then!

Exactly, which perfectly highlights why I said that it's not ideal- it won't be all set until the contract's signed. But for every case like that, there are many, many more where the agreement in principle is signed and officialized. It isn't a guarantee, but it's about as close as you're going to get until you actually get one.

I disagree. Bodden wouldn't sign with the Pats a year ago unless he got a one-year deal with a clause that he wouldn't be tagged. In other words it was his intention to see what the best offer he could get as a free agent after a year starting for a playoff team. It wasn't a case of them 'letting him go'; it was Bodden's choice, from a full year ago, to see what he could get in free agency and then make his choice where he would play and for how much.

Re: Lombardi: Pats have re-signed Bodden [Agent: "Rumors are premature at best"]

The Houston Texans forums have been raving for days about Bodden's talent. LOL at Texans fans now. Their FO is as clutch as Kris Brown.
