Blandino taking personal control of post-season officiating

Where's the transparency? Wheres's the integrity, Roger? How can fans have any faith in the honesty of Blandino's Bandits when they are operating in the dark, out of the public's eye.

I'm really starting to get a queasy feeling that organized crime may have gained entre into the NYJFL offices. The seriousness of this issue makes it essential that Blandino's review activities be open to public scrutiny.

After what's transpired in that league and its offices in the last year or two, I'd believe ANYTHING is possible.

In other words, despite roger's recent ball washing of the refs, they realize this year's reffing has been the worst ever.

Sad to say that the officiating in the NFL is the worst of all the sports. When you have dipsticks like Polian rewriting the rules every year, without any input from the officials, that's what happens.

While the NFL does suck, I think @Deus Irae and I would argue that the officiating in the NBA is absolutely beyond pathetic. The crap that they allow and the preferential treatment they provide certain players is ridiculous.

This will have no effect on whether the Patriots win or lose the Super Bowl and a lot of you are being big babies over this.

No but its stuff like Blandino lying last January and February, NFL officials not understanding IDL, Gronk being targeted for OPI and the stuff below that clearly does not instill consumer confidence that the competitive landscape is pure.

This is the same league and officiating officials who "cooked the books" on their referee reviews to get not the highest rated official to do a Super Bowl but one who after 8 negative marks against him were suddenly removed then became the highest ranked official.

Some officials cry foul over Jerome Boger refereeing the Super Bowl

I really shouldn't have commented the way that I did. I stopped watching the NBA a long time ago.

With the way the NYJFL is heading, I may soon be down to hockey and golf as the only two sports that I support. I'm fairly certain that those two are on the up and up.

Yea...

I actually have major issues with the PGA and the equipment they allow players on tour to use.

With that said I understand why they allow it.

Don't even get me going on belly-putters....

I am most concerned with the plays they decide not to review when the ref gets it wrong.

See, this isn't scary to me because of some conspiracy theory against the Patriots. It's scary because we apparently have such wide spread incompetence among the refs that they need a consultant to help them figure out what down it is and how many yards to mark off on a penalty.

That and making calls on plays when the video evidence in inconclusive- Like White's catch last Sunday.

The if-then is that when the video evidence is inconclusive, then the call on the field stands.

The NFL severely f-ed up on the White catch. Awful.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but the language in the rule change seems to indicate that the White catch is precisely the kind of play that Blandino can NOT affect. He can remind the refs that the clock should stop (or keep running) and such, but can't reverse a call on the field that isn't subjected to ordinary film review.

I only wish we could hear audio of the communications between former standup comic Blandino and game refs

Head Ref: Hello NY....take a look at this sideline catch to confirm two feet were inbounds
Blandino: There once was a girl from Nantucket.........

Head Ref: Can you confirm the RB's knee touched the field before the fumble?
Blandino: A priest, a rabbi, and monkey walked into a bar....

Head Ref: Take a look to see if the Patriots WR made a football move before losing the ball
Blandino: F**k Belichick
Goodell overheard in the background: F**k the Patriots

Not 100% sure. I'll need to re-read what was sent out yesterday.

Even if the directive excludes Blandino from the review process, I would not put it past him or them to do exactly what they did on Sunday night and basically ignore the rule.

That's where the big tipping point is: By letter of the rule, this isn't a bad change. Helps get the basics right which is never a bad thing. But it opens the door for corruption or meddling, and if there isn't some sort of transparent oversight of the process, any sweet nothings that Blandino gently whispers in the refs' ears will be their little secret.

You are missing that even before this change Blandino was in control of replay reviews. You are correct that this change doesn't expand the review powers he already has. But it does give him new power to tell the refs where the ball should be marked after penalties, what the clock should be set to, etc.

Exactly. On the surface it makes sense but I'm very cynical in it's sincerity, governance model and lack of execution.

I thought Blandino said that the officiating this year was top notch. Why, then, the need to take it over? Could it be because he lied and realizes that the officiating has really been a mixture of dog crap and pure incompetence?

If the league decides it wants to "affect" a given play, it won't matter a fiddler's hoo-rah what type of play it is. They'll just f###### make up some BS explanation. Why is this necessary when The Dope (aka Goodell) recently described the job the officials have done this season as "extraordinary?" This idea has Patriots playoff f### job written all over it. And if that makes me paranoid, I stand before everyone as "guilty as charged."

Something doesn't add up here.

If I were Blandino's career coach, I would have advised him not to do what he is doing.

Interjecting himself into a very complicated process and he does not have the tools, experience or infrastructure to get the job done right.

Spotting footballs has not been an issue (IMO) and he is ensconcing himself into this process and he is 1000s of miles away?

One highly visible blown call could end his career with the NFL. He is an administrator- not an official.

This is career suicide waiting to happen.

This is window dressing, cosmetics and good PR to increase confidence in the officiating.

This is his first VP-level job and is being politically manipulated.

I wonder if he is being pushed into this role by a hire authority?

Who in the NFL office is purely focused on PR?

I think I know who is putting him up to this.....

Oh, and one more thing: it won't be long, as in the week prior to Wild Card weekend, before we get the rigged air pressure results from the league's season-long study disproving the Ideal Gas Law and the Brady/NE stance. Book it.
