Blandino explains Hochuli's 'forward progress' call

I think BB only gets pissed at officials when they DON't know the rules as well as he does, and if they calling a game very inconsistently. He leaves the complaining to the media and fans, and most of the time he will get a fair break from the refes (with those exceptions where the directives come directly for 345 Park Ave to tilt the game.

Speaking as a referee (college soccer) that is the critical thing. Good coaches and good teams can deal with bad referees. They'll figure out what is getting called and not called and work with that.

Good coaches and good teams go batshit insane when they are dealing with an inconsistent referee. They can't figure out what is going to be legal and what is going to be penalized today. They can't adapt.

Hoculi's call was probably wrong, but that crap happens. In my mind there were 3 worse call during the game. The non- touch on McCourty's pick, there was a brutal hold on Hogan during the fleaflicker play that probably coast them a TD on that play, even though in ended up being a completion, and one of the holds, I think it was on Mason, that was particularly weak and killed a drive. But that stuff happens too.

What we forget too often is that the refs are part of the game and like the coaches, and players, they too make mistake. You can tell from BB's comments today how the Pats deal with bad calls. They deal with them the same way you deal with a fumble, pick, or a drop. You have to move on to the next pay, and only bad things can happen if you dwell on it for more than a second. Because if you do, it will affect the next play.

THAT is how the Pats are coached to deal with the refs. They are part of the game and just like everyother part of the game they will make mistakes, Some go against y0u, some in favor. Just move on to the next play and win THAT one.

On the other hand, Bandino (who has never reffed a game) is a blitering idiot who is just ANOTHER reason to hate the NFL, usual adds gas to the flames of any officiating contraversy and is another momument to the NFL's Peter Principle

If we're thinking of the same play, the hold in question was on Thuney, and yeah it was pretty questionable, drive-killing call.

So basically anytime you hit a qb from the front for a sack and the balls comes out its not a fumble.

no, you missed a subtle nuance:
anytime the Patriots hit a QB from the front for a sack and the ball comes out it's not a fumble.

That was definitely a fumble but I didn't get too worked up about it cuz IMO flowers never had control of it before the other patriot (sheard?) knocked it out of his hands as he was rolling up. Then a raven fell on it so it would have been ravens ball just about where flaccid got sacked. Wrong call that achieved the right result so *shrug* just another notch on the total asskicking the ravens just received.

In 55 years plus of watching football i have never heard of the "qbs forward progress stopped" when a qb was going BACK to pass and being sacked. I don't have to read the article to know its complete bull sht.
Reflection: How do you sack a QB causing a fumble without going backward? By the explanation, a defensive player typically would need to come from behind the qb to cause a fumble. How about admitting the ref got it wrong. Good post.

what? Flowers was on the ground and stood up with the ball in his hand...of course he had control.

Manning was definitely in the grasp. Whenever ive watched that play i think the ref is going to blow the whistle, because willy mac had him in the grasp for 5-6 seconds and mannings falling backwards.

The ref (Mike Carey) has said on the record that he was just about to blow the play dead and then Manning escaped.

QBs fumble from blindside or from-behind hits all the time, neither of which drive the QB backwards.

I'll have to watch it again because the way i remember it manning threw the ball as he was being pulled down to the turf. I don't remember him escaping.

"The non- touch on McCourty's pick"

His middle finger brushed his hand as he was falling. You can see his finger bend backward on the tape when you slow it down. It's slight but it is there.

That is true. What is unclear is that if Mccourty had possession of the ball or not when he was touched by the hand. Open to interpretation if he was still bobbling the ball or not.

The league needs to get over itself.

Its a game played and officiated by humans.

As much as the NFL would like to believe, the world does not end with a blown call.

Hockaloogie messed up. I was pissed on Monday but oh well.

If Blandinko had said, "The NFL Rulebook states bla bla bla. Using his best judgement, Ed and his crew applied the rule to the play as best they could. The call was very similar to bla bla play. As it pertains to the play in question, we might need to revisit the rule in the offseason. We strive to be consistent but it was a close play. ".

While I still would have been pissed, honesty and humility goes a LONG way in PR. I still hate him, but I would have been ok with the answer.

Instead, we get this snake-oil, cover-up ******** he is trying to sell.

And people wonder why the NFL is perceived as a stuffy, pretentious, CIA-like entity?

As frustrating as the call during the game was and as mind-bending as Blandino's explanation was*, just think how fun it would be to see the reaction by Ravens fans and the media if Dumervil was sacking Brady and the same call was made.

*At least give yourself some gray area and say it was a borderline call and the official went with what he saw. That way, when a similar play happens next week and it's ruled a fumble, they can claim the official interpreted it differently. Saying it was called correctly because that's how these plays should be called will burn you when they are called differently in the future.

Go rewatch it, he is rolling to his feet and it is knocked out of his hand accidentally by ninkovich who wasn't expecting him to be there. Slowed down I could see the argument he did have control and it's closer then I recalled in real time. However, it's really close as he had it in his hands for less then a second. Clear possession? I would have been fine with them upholding whatever was called on the field as I see no conclusive evidence one way or the other. Next time hold that **** and don't showboat

I just watched it on All 22 and it's really close but I can see how the ref called it down by contact. It does look as McCourty had secured the ball.

But it was a fingernail that grazed him.

Wish I could give you a like agree and winner. Be honest, admit mistakes, and try to improve going forward. It's the most anyone can ask for cuz in real life **** happens. It's the cover up and lying I can't stand
