Captures a Boston fan's emotion and drama. I agree with his lofty placement of the Butler pick.

I actually think the Butler pick was bigger than the Roberts steal. It’s the single biggest either/or play in the history of Boston sports … and probably NFL history, too. If Butler picks it off, the Patriots win the Super Bowl. If he’s a split-second late, or he doesn’t hold on to the ball, they probably lose the Super Bowl. There’s no in-between. It’s either the greatest or the second-greatest interception in Super Bowl history, depending on how you feel about James Harrison’s 100-yard scamper. You could make a legitimate case that it’s the most important defensive play in NFL history. Other than that, no big deal.

Was just coming here to post it.

Seriously... amazing stuff.

"And so an undrafted rookie made the biggest defensive play in Super Bowl history. But how much credit does Belichick get? People bring up his savvy game plans against the 1990 Bills and 2001 Rams, or the ballsy Brady-over-Bledsoe decision, or 11 wins without Brady in 2008, or a Super Bowl win with Troy Brown playing nickelback, or even the controversial fourth-down call against Indy that didn’t work and became The Call That Built The Sloan Conference. They bring up Spygate, his disheveled outfits, his salty press conferences, even his bad cop/good cop relationship with the Krafts. They bring up how he mastered the art of trading down in drafts and coldly dumping key players one year too soon instead of one year too late. They bring up his Rain Man–like ability to relentlessly look forward without ever dwelling on the past.

On to Baltimore. On to Indianapolis. On to Seattle.

He’s a coaching machine. There’s a human being lurking under there, someone whom his friends swear by, but Belichick never allows the public to see it. He uses Patriots fans the same way we use him and the Krafts use him. We just want to win. We don’t care that America doesn’t like him. We stay out of his way. Just don’t quit on us. Don’t retire. Don’t announce out of the blue, “I’m good, I’m done, see you later.” You can’t even compare him to other football coaches. Who was Belichick’s competition these last 15 years? Andy Reid? Tony Dungy? Bill Cowher? Tom Coughlin? Please.

And yet, Belichick never had that one signature moment. We never caught it when it happened in this Seahawks game — that’s how good this one was. We thought he fell asleep. We thought he froze. Repeat: We thought Bill Belichick froze.

You know what really happened? Belichick trusted seven months of practice and two weeks of scouting, and he trusted the fact that he’d already prepared a 24-year-old undrafted rookie to react perfectly, historically and remarkably if that slant was coming. He’ll never get credit because nobody will ever totally believe it. After all, how could a coach behave THAT differently from every other coach in that exact same spot?

The answer: He’s not like any other coach. Of anyone — seriously, of anyone — he’s the one guy who would stand there and say, “You know what? I think Pete Carroll might screw this up. I’m not doing anything even if I don’t have the best hand. I’m gonna let him raise the pot. CHECK.” The rest was history. Whenever you’re arguing about the greatest NFL coaches of all time, just remember the final minute of Super Bowl XLIX. The man finally gave us his version of Jordan’s game winner in the ’98 Finals. And like everything else that happened with the great Bill Belichick over the years, nobody totally believed him."

I'm also trying to reconsile in my mind its historical place in Boston history.

My initial reaction is that it is ahead of the Bird, Hondo amd Roberts steals and right with the Orr goal and AV kicks in 01.

Simmons' explanation of the no timeout call is excellent. He even admits he needed 24 hours, lots looking at the play and an email from a poker playing friend to even understand what had happened. It's excellent.

It's a great diary, but Simmons podcast with his dad talking about how Brady might be disgusted with Belichick, Belichick throwing Brady under the bus, and the whole defeatist attitude was ill-advised. He should delete that podcast.

Marshawn in a Patriots uniform would be unreal, although unlikely. Great praise for Julian Edelman, but Simmons doesn't put up the more entertaining BurgerTyme or the 2nd Smoothie Tyme.

I love Simmons but year after year he puts Brady and Belichick down. EVERY SINGLE year he has a Brady/BB washed up type of article. He had one this year too where he was ball washing Manning and even said he'd rather have Manning over him because Manning is such a competitor or some crap like that while Brady is just along for the ride.

I dont care for his Patriots insight

Essential reading.

Pete have a tendency in his coaching career to take way too much risk when the situation clearly states go for the safe bet. On that play, both coaches take a gamble, but only New England was desperate enough that they have to gamble. Seattle on the other hand, does not have to. 4th and 2 at the Rose bowl 2006, Pete just did it again on Sunday night.

you guys are an idiot. simmons downplays brady/bb because he is a fan. he does it to curb himself. he does it to curb his expectation. he is a classic chicken little boston fan.

in few weeks, he will probably write about brady is the GOAT piece.

He certainly will. I heard him on Colin Cowherd and he was adamant on the GOAT thing. I highly doubt he holds that Mount Rushmore opinion anymore.

yeah. and boston fans can't possibly hate on simmons. he is one of us.

Bill Simmons is a basketball guy that unfortunately gets stuck trying to cover the Patriots because he WAS from Boston. Yes, past tense. As Adam Carolla has pointed out to him, Simmons has lived longer in L.A. than Boston.

I've come to hate Simmons but goddamn was this a good read.

I used to love the guy. We are both New Englanders, love Hoosiers, are about the same age, close with our dads and watch sports with them, and are cynical douche bags. So other than my still living in NE and having a soul, we have a lot in common.

Yes, Simmons says a lot of stuff that makes him sound like an idiot, but this column knocked it out of the park, IMO. (However, I followed the link he posted to his Edelman anecdote and was reminded of the stupid, stupid things he writes).
