'The single most important year in my development’: Bill Belichick, Ernie Adams and the 1970 Andover football team - The Boston Globe
Old times, old friends
There's never a guarantee that you'll be a success in life or your career; but Bill and Ernie had an early leg up, thanks in large part to their friendship and collaborations as kids. While Ernie was identified right away by his college coach, and Chuck Fairbanks here after graduating, as gifted, special and innovative, Bill's start in the NFL with the Colts was relatively modest.
As I've pointed out here before, it took me years appreciate and understand Bill Parcells' talent and leadership qualities; but among other things I'm really glad he kept BB on board when he took over the Giants. I guess we'll never fully appreciate how important it was that Willie McDonough set up the meeting with Parcells and James Orthwein, but Pats fans sure didn't need a slide rule to figure out that we had instant credibility on the field with him as our new coach.
That said, no, there's still no way Tuna belongs in the team HOF ahead of Adams, Francis, Gray, or Fairbanks.
