Bedard Revis Interview

Revis is going to have a big post season moment reminiscent of Rodney Harrison this year. I can feel it.

Good find. Loved it.

Revis strikes me as a very thoughtful man. When he speaks, there aren't many wasted words. Seems very well grounded.

Very cool that he and Kraft have that direct relationship. That could come in handy.

Interesting that in the article he said, "It is what it is" twice.

I agree Revis definitely seems to be a Belichick type of player (too bad the 2 of them couldn't have come together sooner).

Now, I'd like to get him drunk and ask most of those questions again and see what he has to say (not that I would share it with the world as I respect the man first and foremost).

As the Immortal Prime Time would say Pay the Man!

I just find his repeated references to 'fine' in discussing experiences with the Pats unsettling. Men have long been trained to fear that word in conversations with significant others.

Revis is a true pro, apparently with a Brady-like work ethic (I did like his response to "what he learned about Brady" - it had a creepy CIA feel to it in referencing off-field information when studying opponents). He lets his performance speak for him, which is an approach lost on many in the NFL today. I hope he sticks around for a while.

I see nothing wrong with this. A true competitor will take advantage of every possible angle and bit of information to win.

He fits perfectly here.

According to Revis, BB lets his players be themselves.

According to Welker, BB smothers his players with rules and regulations. In DEN he has had more freedom to express himself...

I'm sure they can be themselves, unless they are talking to the media. BB definitely has a policy on that form of communication.

Welker was just mad that Bekichick didn't condone the use of Molly's and other synthetic narcotics.
The man loves his Mollys.

Thanks for the find Mayo. It was a typically good article from Bedard. He didn't shy away from asking most of the question we'd have asked had we had the chance.

I loved your description of him being as "smooth in the interview as he is on the field". It was the perfect metaphor. He got in and out of Bedard's questions as efficiently as he gets in and out of his breaks. I think the biggest thing I got out of this was how little he actually said. In that he was truly Belichickian. He deftly sidestepped the obvious questions about whether he'll stay, what about his uncle, and money. He is very skilled at not being standoffish, yet giving little in the way of insights.

Like BB, I think he would have opened up a bit more had Bedard directed some questions toward general football talk because its clear he is a student of the game. As bland and predictable as BB's pressers are, his talks on football theory, history, and general x's and o's , are reportedly riveting.

Another thing I inferred was how much of an impact Bob Kraft has with his players, even the elite ones like Revis. You wouldn't think the kid from Brookline and the kid from Allaquippa would have much common ground, yet somehow he reaches them.

Think about it. Kraft is a fully immersed owner, yet one who doesn't interfere with the football operations. He does a great job of simply being a boss who fully backs his COO. So while BB is clearly the guy who runs the operation, Kraft, to the players at least, is still the boss, and is treated as such. I don't think that that's an easy balance to maintain. When it comes to recruiting players, there are a lot of reasons for a player to choose to come here. We shouldn't underestimate the value of having Bob Kraft as the owner as one of them.

Revis is the real deal, period. He's intelligent as all get out, and he's exactly right in his approach to the contracts. NFL players give too much to take less than they can. I love how Revis structured his 16m/year deal with Tampa - put everything on his own shoulders.

I hope he retires here. The level of maturity he brings to the team is pretty awesome.

Great interview. Someone forgot to tell Revis that Chris Harris is supposedly the best corner in the league, but otherwise really good. Good Q's by Bedard.

I like how he keeps referring to the team as "we" throughout the interview. Love Revis. Excellent leader on the defensive side of the ball and he is, without question, the best CB in the league. Please lock him up long-term.

I think that one thing that came across is that Revis is completely comfortable with who he is - as a player, as a teammate, and as a businessman - and that he really doesn't give a sh*t what other people think. Doesn't care if people think Sherman or Peterson is better. Doesn't care if people think he's a mercenary. It really means nothing to him, because he's totally comfortable with who he is. In that respect, he's very similar to BB.

Jeff Howe had another nice piece on Revis today, which reflected some of this:
Go ahead and call Darrelle Revis the “Best Cornerback on the Planet.” Use it as his title or the first line in his bio.

Revis insists he doesn’t care. That labels mean little, if anything. That nonexistent crowns are nothing but old hat.

“I’m over that,” Revis said about being known as the league’s best corner. “Everybody has got their own opinions. The world is full of opinions. You don’t know which one is right. You don’t know which one is wrong. I don’t get into that whole opinion thing. Guys have opinions and feel a certain way, and that’s how it is. I’m all about team ball and just winning. That’s the main goal, just winning. When you win, it eliminates a lot of things.”

I think Revis is genuinely enjoying winning and being part of this organization. I also know that he'll use his own formula for deciding how much that counts when it comes to a new deal. "The world is full of opinions", and as long as he is comfortable with himself he just doesn't care.

After reading this all I could think was how Talib would have planted at least five times the word "dawg" into his answers. I don't want to call Aqib unprofessional but those two are clearly on completely different levels when it comes to their approach to the game.

I like Browner's "interview" more. Understandably, neither one wants to reveal tricks of the trade, but Browner was pretty funny. It's hard not to like Revis though. One way or another he will be here next year.

Translation. BB smothers his players with rules and regulations when it comes to speaking to the media. If you're stupid enough to give the media more than the Patriots allow, you will be smothered. If you're smart and keep your responses concise BB will let you be yourself. WW has been known to put his foot in his mouth on occasion (yes/pure pun)
