Blast it into the stands. We don't kick off into the wind and invite a fluke return for mileage.

Onside kicks are not used in such situations. Squib kicks can be though, and without the good field position a squib kick might have been the option.

They were debating the same thing on PFW. I tend to think that BB made the right decision since he was doing the same thing he did during every other game, asking himself, "What's the best and worst that could happen on this play?"

Onsides kick
Best case scenario we recover an onsides kick = we win.
Or the Ravens pull some shenanigans (Music City Miracle) = we lose.
The only other benefit would be time going off of the clock when the ball is bouncing around

Touchback
This requires the Ravens to go on a long drive to either do attempt field goal with swirling winds or a hail mary.

Also it was our run defense that was having problems so with the Ravens having to pass the ball this would benefit our D under the touchback scenario.

I'll admit, the thought of an onside kick did cross my mind, but I had the same realization as other posters (i.e., zero chance of a TD . . . That said--what about a squib kick straight toward the end zone?

I thought of both but, again, in that situation I was happy to just blast away and let them try to gain 60 yards in 45 or so second. Even that would have resulted in a high 30s FG attempt which would have been tough in that direction.

The squib option still has risk of a long kick return, offset by very little potential benefit. Whether they get the ball on the 10 or the 20 yard line makes little difference in that situation.

According to the rule, when a kick-off goes out of bounds the ball is placed 30 yards from the spot of the kick. Therefore it would have been placed at the 5, or the Ravens could have taken it from where the ball went out of bounds. So in that case the best thing to do would have been to angle the kick out of bounds inside the 20. Oh well maybe in another 20 years when that scenario presents itself again.

yea, even if he did catch that hail marry, there would have been a flag for the molesting of sammuel....at least there should have been.
