Even with the backups in the game, New England managed to make it an interesting spectacle down to the wire. Rookie quarterback Matt Cassel played three quarters and led a late comeback that fell just an incomplete two-point conversion pass too short and veteran quarterback Doug Flutie converted the first drop-kick extra point in the NFL since 1941.

Some conspiracy theorists surmise that the Patriots were trying to pick their opponent and actually avoided moving up to the No. 3 seed in the AFC playoffs. Was Cassel instructed to miss the two-point conversion pass (which he overthrew badly) to avoid overtime?
"Definitely not," Cassel said. "We were playing to win and the ball slipped out of my hand. I wanted to tie that thing up and go to OT."

There are believers, and not all of them wear blue, silver, red and white.
"If I was a betting man, I'd bet on them being in Detroit," said Dolphins defensive lineman Jason Taylor.
